The speedometer gear inside my transmission needs to be replaced

I have a 66 galaxies 500 with a four speed manual transmission.  The speedo cable is
ok, but the gear inside the trans has a couple of missing teeth.  Can I change this gear
from the outside, or does the trans need to be disassembled?

Based on what I see on the diagram from my 1968 labor guide it looks like it comes out after the speedometer cable assembly is unbolted from the outside. BTW it's part number C2AZ-17271A. It cost $0.95 in 1968. Now here's my question. Where did the missing teeth go? I'd change the oil in the transmission just to be safe. HTH. -Jim
