2004 Ford Focus stalls and has trouble starting afterward

Asked by Oct 09, 2019 at 10:02 PM about the 2004 Ford Focus

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

We got our first major snowfall today and I
started up my Focus to warm it up after a
couple of days not driving it. After close to 10
mins, I drove for about 1/4 mile before I came
to a stop sign and my vehicle stalled out. It
had trouble restarting and I got it to run again
after several attempts but it died quickly. I
got a jump from a friend and it started up fine
and I drove off. A few miles down the road it
died again as I entered a roundabout with the
clutch depressed and at low rpms. I popped
the hood again and saw the coolant was
pretty much empty so I walked to the nearest
gas station and bought some to refill it. I got
it to start again right away but it cut out on
me again two blocks away where I had my
roommate come give me another jump. This
time, we watched the engine die while the
cables were attached from his car to mine.
What could be causing this ? The cold? The
lack of coolant? The alternator? I did some
research and think a bad PCV valve might be
possible as well.

If you can get a code reader on the car, that might help. Most common causes for an engine to die right after starting are idle air control valve system, MAP/MAF sensor, engine coolant temperature sensor, faulty ignition coil, and maybe the fuel pump or its relay. But this could be electrical where a bad alternator is failing to keep the car running and failing to recharge the battery.
