Stuttering coming from the back end

Asked by Jun 17, 2019 at 08:25 AM about the 2004 Ford Explorer

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I just bought a 2004 explorer and it seemed
to run fine until I drove it all day and now I'm
getting some stuttering coming from the
back end when I let my foot off the gas to
decelerate for a light. It's almost as if the
back tires are catching on something and
suddenly the car will pull to the left for no
reason. It seems to shift fine and I don't
smell hit tranny fluid but I can't think of
anything other than maybe a bad drive shaft.
Please help

Explorers are known to have wheel bearing problems. You might have one ready to disintegrate and lock up. My second guess is a brake caliper dragging, or pad wanting to jam up because the friction material came off. Have it looked at, and if there's leakage, check differential fluid while it's on the rack.

I'm not hearing any humming coming from the back end typical in a bearing going bad.
