AHH the Corvair, some bad memories there, but anyway this sounds like a bad switch to start with, the dash lights are fused separate so make sure that has power in and out of the fuse after you replace the headlight switch, after some age these little cars started showing signs of wiring problems so this could be just the tip of the iceberg as far as wiring goes, I remember back in the day we has a Corvair pickup that we got from a salvage yard, he said it ran when he got but the wiring was toast, and he was right, after completely retiring the thing, got it started and it did run fine until it got to operational temp then if you shut it off it wouldn't crank over, come to find out it had a bad crankshaft, common for these, when it got hot it was egg shaped just enough to bind in the mains. New crank and bearing kit and it was back to running properly. Then there is the belt pitching, a little too much throttle and Belt would fly off. Good luck on your Amercian air cooler.
