Where should i start?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Car has been sitting for several years. Tank is gunked up and coated with trash
from gas setting. How Do i clean it? Thanks.

If it is that bad then steam cleaning is the only way to get it completely clean, but if there was water in the tank you could also have rusted spots that may start leaking once fuel is put in, it may need to be coated if that is the case, then you have rest of the system to get cleaned out or even replaced if the lines and hoses are rotted.


They make a Gas tank cleaner that is Green . I don't remember what it is called but I'm sure you can Google.it . In fact hold on I'll chk for you ok Star Brite *Star Tron. .you can get it on Amazon. Follow directions amd it works great . Good luck .

Your local radiator shop should be able to clean the tank for you. But it'll be easier and cheaper to replace the tank if you can find a new one. Try rockauto.com. On a side note, if the tank is that bad so is the rest of the fuel system. Gasoline turns to varnish, a gooey mess, when it evaporates. HTH. -Jim
