A tune up is routine maintenance. It involves replacing the distributor cap, distributor rotor, spark plug wires, and spark plugs. It's not very expensive. If it were me I'd have the seller do it. Then I'd test drive it to be sure that it's running ok. If it's currently running poorly or misfiring it could just need a tune up. But it could also have a burned valve (big bucks to fix) or some other major engine problem. Proceed with caution. Don't want you getting stuck with a huge repair bill!! HTH. -Jim

Also it won't pass smog. The seller is responsible for the smog. Unless it has been done in the last 90 days have him do it.

That depends on where you are & the age/mileage on the vehicle. In NJ only if you buy a vehicle from a dealer and it is less than 10 model years old and has less than 100,000 miles on it is the seller responsible for the vehicle passing inspection. HTH. -Jim
