when trying to add freon to my 2008 dodge ram 1500, the gage reads all the way in the red and the compressor kicks on and off. any suggestions

Sounds like you got a do it yourself kit. Take my advise have it done by a professional. You more than likely use R134A to where you can not hook up the manifolds wrong, but you could still introduce the gas wrong. Hate to see you get seriously injured! I've seen the results, not pretty!!!

Ran across this before if it is one of these charge it yourself cans, I got one some time back that had the wrong fitting on it, it was the high side instead of the low, never hooked it up just took it back, double check make sure your not on the high side port and the can is misbuilt.
