Smokes on start up when cold

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Vectra 2.6 V6. When starting up from cold it smokes (oil). I've been told either valve stem seals or guides. Anybody any advice to any tests that could find the cause? If the guides have gone, is it a d.i.y job  or a specialist?

orite m8 i work for a vauxhall main dealer the best way 2 check for the oil burning is 2 do a consumption test fill the oil to the top mark then do 500 miles if it has dropped significantly then the engine will need stripping for further investigation (not a d.i.y job m8) bare in mind that most engines burn 1ltr of oil every 1000 miles so below the half way mark and it will need work done. if it doesnt drop much i wouldnt worry about it. hope this helps.
