2020 Volvo XC60 Hybrid Plug-in Overview

Right now, the Volvo XC60 is the only compact luxury crossover available as a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV). It doesn’t get any notable changes for 2020 beyond the addition of a new Polestar Engineered trim to the lineup and a slight boost to its all-electric range.

The XC60 Hybrid Plug-In comes in Momentum, R-Design, Inscription, and a new Polestar Engineering trim. The Momentum bundles 19-inch alloy wheels, LED exterior lights, leather upholstery, aluminum trim, 10-way power seats, and a 9-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Other trims get you Nappa leather, wood inlays, larger wheels, Harman Kardon or Bowers & Wilkins audio, and more.

The new Polestar Engineered trim is performance-oriented. It comes with special 21-inch wheels, gold brake calipers, metal mesh interior trim, Nappa leather and cloth upholstery, and a Polestar suspension with manually adjustable dampers.

The XC60 Hybrid Plug-In comes with Volvo’s “T8 eAWD” powertrain. That gets you an electrified, turbocharged, and supercharged 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder engine, battery, and an 8-speed automatic. A separate electric motor powers the rear axle for standard all-wheel drive (AWD). For Momentum, R-Design, and Inscription models, the package produces 400 horsepower and 472 pound-feet of torque. Polestar Engineered models eke out another 15 hp, making 415 hp and 494 lb-ft. Fuel economy is as high as 27 mpg combined in hybrid mode, or 57 combined miles-per-gallon equivalent in electric mode. According to the EPA, the XC60 Hybrid Plug-In has 19 miles of all-electric range and 520 miles of total range.

The entire XC60 family comes standard with a reversing camera, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, and traffic-sign recognition. The semi-autonomous Pilot Assist system, which includes adaptive cruise control, is optional. Other options include blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic detection, a 360-degree camera system, and a heads-up display. The XC60 as a whole scored a 2019 Top Safety Pick designation from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
