2020 Porsche Macan Overview
Porsche gave its Macan crossover SUV a significant refresh for 2019. For 2020, Porsche brought the Macan Turbo back with a new, more powerful engine. As with the last Turbo, the 2020 model also has more aggressive styling and standard features.
Trims include the base Macan, the Macan S, and the Macan Turbo. With more performance pedigree than just about any crossover on the market, it also has the usability of a lifted all-wheel-drive (AWD) 5-door.
Base versions of the Macan get a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that makes 248 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. The Macan S adds a twin-turbocharged V6 that is much more potent at 348 horsepower and 354 pound-feet of torque. Finally, the new Turbo swaps the old 3.6-liter twin-turbo V6 for a smaller, yet more powerful, 2.9-liter unit, good for 434 hp and 406 lb-ft. Porsche claims the Turbo will do 0-60 mph in 4.3 seconds, or 4.1 with the optional Sport Chrono package. Shifting comes via a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic. AWD comes standard. The base 4-cylinder manages just 21 combined mpg and the Macan S manages 20 combined. The Macan Turbo is not yet rated by the EPA.
All Macans come with a sports-car-like staggered tire setup ranging from 18 to 21 inches. Steel springs are standard, and adjustable dampers are available, as is an air suspension system, which can lower the ride height by 0.6 inches or up to a full inch in Sport+ mode. The Macan S adds larger brakes to cope with the extra power, while the Turbo comes standard with a sport exhaust, adaptive suspension, and a coating of tungsten carbide on the brakes to reduce brake dust.
Every Macan comes generously equipped. A 10.9-inch touchscreen, navigation, and a wireless hotspot come standard. Four USB ports, 3-zone automatic climate control, a 10-speaker stereo, and a power tailgate also come standard. Upgraded Bose or Burmester stereos are optional, as are various extra trims for the interior as well as the popular Sport Chrono package, which adds a stopwatch on the dash and a Launch Control feature. The interior feels more like a sports car than most crossovers, with its well-bolstered seats and small steering wheel. There are 17.6 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats, which opens up to 52.9 cubic feet with the seats folded.
Parking sensors, a reversing camera, and lane-departure warnings all come standard on the Macan, while a surround-view camera, active lane control, blind-spot monitors, and adaptive cruise control with automatic emergency braking are optional.
While it’s among the most fun, fast, and agile crossovers one can buy, the Porsche Macan is not without competition. German rivals include Audi’s SQ5, higher-tier versions of the Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class, and the BMW X4 M.
