2020 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class Overview
The Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class, a subcompact luxury crossover, carries over unchanged for 2020. It competes against the likes of the Audi Q3 and BMW X1.
The GLA-Class incorporates two trims, the GLA 250 and the AMG GLA 45. The GLA 250 gets a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder that makes 208 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque that pairs to a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission (DCT). Front-wheel drive (FWD) comes standard, while the 4MATIC all-wheel-drive (AWD) system is available. Fuel economy for the base GLA 250 is 24 mpg city, 33 highway, and 27 combined with premium fuel. With 4MATIC AWD, fuel economy drops to 23, 31, 26.
The AMG GLA 45 houses a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder that makes 375 hp and 350 lb-ft. An AMG-tuned transmission and AWD come standard on every version, helping to rocket the crossover to 60 mph in just 4.3 seconds. The AMG GLA 45 doesn’t suffer much of a fuel-economy deficit, delivering 22, 28, and 25.
The GLA 250 trim comes with 18-inch wheels, aluminum roof rails, an 8-inch infotainment system, a power liftgate, leatherette upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, Bluetooth connectivity, and keyless start. The AMG Line Exterior Package adds 19-inch AMG wheels, perforated front brakes with painted calipers, and a black headliner. The Premium Package adds keyless access, satellite radio, heated front seats, and a hands-free power liftgate. The Convenience Package tacks on auto-dimming mirrors, a compass, and a garage door opener. Navigation, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, LED exterior lights, and a panoramic sunroof are also available.
Mercedes-Benz gives the AMG GLA 45 the same tech features as the GLA 250 plus a body kit and a lowered stance. Several 19- and 20-inch wheel options are available, along with further enhancements like a black-out package, a two-stage dampening suspension system, a limited-slip front differential, and a large rear wing. Inside, the AMG GLA 45 gets sport seats and red accents on the seatbelts and around the vents. Options include nicer front seats and multi-color ambient lighting.
Across the GLA-Class range, standard safety features include a reversing camera, automatic emergency braking, a driver-alertness monitor, and rain-sensing windshield wipers. The driver-assistance package adds adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist. Meanwhile, the Parking Assistance Package bundles a surround-view camera system, a parking assistant, and power-folding side mirrors. Blind-spot monitoring is a standalone option. The GLA-Class hasn't been crash-tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
The Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class is a petite crossover with good bones and plenty of luxury.
