2015 Jaguar XJR Overview

So you’ve had your eye on a 2015 Jaguar XJ, and your bonus was larger than expected. With that extra cash, perhaps you’ll want to step up to the British/Indian automaker’s flagship 2015 XJR full-size luxury sedan that features all the bells and whistles of the XJ lineup along with a slew of added power, posh and panache, not to mention a hefty price tag.

In any case, the 2015 XJR comes in one of a pair of wheelbases, just like its XJ cousins. The standard 119.4-inch wheelbase iteration and the stretched-out 124.3-inch wheelbase (LWB) version offer 201.9 inches and 206.8 inches of overall length respectively, giving the XJR LWB a few added inches of rear-seat legroom. Alas, the traditional roof swoop with its rear headroom challenges remains the same in both lengths. Oh, and trunk space in both variations is a fairly hefty 15.2 cubic feet.

Essentially unchanged for 2015, this top-shelf XJ justifies its “R” rating with, among other things, a heavily tweaked version of the 5.0-liter supercharged V8 powerplant that’s standard in the XJ Supercharged trim. Mated with the traditional 8-speed shiftable automatic transmission (with steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters), the up-powered super-force-fed V8 throws down 550 hp and 502 lb-ft of torque, scoots from 0-60 in 4.1 seconds and, delivered only in rear-wheel-drive (RWD) configuration, gets 15 mpg city/23 highway.

Cool exterior appointments for either the regular-length or stretched 2015 XJR remain 20-inch alloy wheels mounting performance tires, a rear spoiler, heated power-adjustable mirrors and a power sunroof. Also adorning the profile of this elegant screamer are bright red brake calipers, an “R”-tuned suspension, a front air splitter and quad exhaust pipes.

Inside, look for leather upholstery, heated power-adjustable sport front seats, full power accessories, a heated steering wheel and memory for driver's settings. Of course, cruise control comes standard, as does telescoping tilt-wheel steering, while further standard convenience bling includes a remote garage door opener, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, front and rear parking sensors, and a rear-view camera. Meanwhile, everyone’s kept comfy via standard 4-zone auto climate control.

Returning standard techno-goodies, finally, include Bluetooth calling and audio streaming, hard-drive-based navigation and an 825-watt Meridian stereo boasting 20 speakers, satellite radio and an 8-inch video monitor that integrates the various infotainment functions.

Believe it or not, this well-equipped Jag has a few options packages, with perhaps the most noteworthy being the Premier Rear Seat Package boasting rear-seat DVD entertainment, upgraded leather upholstery, memory for rear-seat passenger settings and comfort-oriented front seats taking the place of the standard sport seats. An available Illumination Package, as well as upgraded wheels, a carbon fiber engine cover and a heated windshield all return as further options for the 2015 XJR.

Standard safety features aboard both the regular-length and LWB XJR iterations include 4-wheel antilock brakes (ABS), front side-mounted airbags, front and rear head airbags, cornering lights and adaptive high-intensity-discharge (HID) headlights. A remote antitheft alarm also comes standard, while an available Adaptive Cruise Control package offers adaptive cruise control with forward-collision warnings and emergency braking assist.

By the way, should your bonus turn out to be not so large, the less expensive but nonetheless high-end Jaguar XJ lineup for 2015 is covered separately.

Have Laptop. Will Travel. I'm retired and travelling the country in a 34' motor home. I'm really digging meeting people . . and sometimes their cars . . . getting a sense of what makes this nation tick. The plan is to visit all the national parks in the continental US, then cruise to Alaska to visit Denali, and to Hawaii to check out Haleakala and the Hawaii Volcano's national parks. Anyhow, when I'm not horsing the motor home around the roadways, I'm tooting around in the 2012 Ford Focus that we tow behind, or making runs to Home Depot and various malls with the 2004 F-150 that just won't die.
