Despite the kinks in the process of making a purchase, I am very pleased with my new unit. It drives very well and is everything I hoping for. Drives well, has enough torque to get down the highway and is very comfortable.

This Is A Surprisingly Good Ride. — I've been a BMW driver for about 12 years and loved the 5 series I drove. After not being able to get a manual transmission and reaching my max to spend for a set of wheels, I decided to stay German but downsize to a VW. That's downsize in price, not volume. This car handles well, has surprisingly good low end torque and gets unbelievable fuel mileage. I do quite a bit of highway driving and get 50 - 53 mpg highway and 45 combined, I couldn't ask for much more. Just to treat people like me who want a manual transmission the same as the folks who are ok with an automatic. The styling of the car is bland, but not offensive. The interior space is very comfortable and has a big enough truck for me to lose things in, and carry quite a bit. If you're thinking of a mid sized car with great fuel mileage don't fear a diesel or this car.

Primary Use: Family transportation

Pros: This car drives well, gets excellent fuel mileage and has a very generous interior.

Cons: I got the TDI with a manual transmission, which meant I could not get a wide variety of accessories that I wanted.  The car is reasonably quiet, with some road noise at higher speeds.  No particular noises or design problems other than it is non-descript.

Best Diesel Car/sedan For Your Money. Period. — Everything about it is fantastic! Owning this has sold me on the TDI brand for life. Having the Diesel engine is a bit more expensive so I wouldn't suggest buying a new one unless you plan on driving 20k+ miles/year, or you intend on owning it for the 200k+ miles it's built to stand up for.

Primary Use: Commuting to work

Pros: Gets better mileage than the sticker suggests, insulated as well as my 2005 750Li, get complimented all the time in it.  Puts a huge smile on my face every time I fill up the gas tank.

Cons: People undervalue the Volkswagen TDI.

2014 Passat — Long time VW owner and leasing the Passat when I really wanted to lease a Golf. Golf was not available with the features I wanted (standard transmission, 4 door, etc.) so settled with the Passat instead. It is a good car but looking forward to trading it at the end of my lease! Will definitely go with VW again and maybe even another Passat IF I can get a manual this time around.

Primary Use: Commuting to work

Pros: Looks good and it is a VW so drives really well.

Cons: Automatic transmission - yuck. Lacks power as a result.

Tetonic Yet American —

So far a total of four NMS Passats in the family. All TDI's. I think this says something. Some will take issue with the conservative styling compared to the flashy offerings of other makers. Some will disagree but I tend to believe the conservative style will age far better. Then being basically German and not Asian... It's one of those things you either appreciate or don't. If you appreciate engineering and build quality, then place the NMS up on a rack and do a complete inspection. There's a reason that a decade old VW will not be rusted out. There's also a reason that at 100k miles the TDI is just getting her first wind. It's really difficult to quantify the difference between VW and most other competitive vehicles but it's truly vast. Downsides? There are some for some types of owners. If all you ever do is climb into your car and turn the key, then perhaps the Passat in general and the TDI in particular may not be your best choice. My experience with many TDI's of different vintages is that they will not tolerate neglect. Have the proper maintenance done or do it yourself. Don't skimp and don't use cheap components. If you fail to keep up there will usually be a price to be paid somewhere down the road. The biggest con? Not opting for the TDI. It makes the Passat something very special.

Pros: This is a car that likes to stretch its legs. I rated "Power" slightly less than a full five stars because it's a TDI and not because it lacks anything. It's just that diesels are different. You probably won't win a race between stoplights but once at cruise you'll seldom have to shift gears. Build quality? Not a single flaw in 19k miles. The SE trim is a bit less than the SEL and without some of the nicer toys. And while both my wife and I really like the SEL, for me the manual transmission on the SE is the icing on the cake. It places the SE on par with the SEL, but just in a different way. How about fuel economy? Winter tires all around and winter fuel... I'll still see over 50 mpg in reasonably good conditions.  Handling is typical VW and the Passat is a rather large car. And then there's range. 700 miles is easy. 800 miles between fill is a bit more difficult but still doable. Some claim even more. All I know for sure is that the car will go a lot longer than I can.

Cons: I really can't think of anything much to complain about. The DEF tank will produce a slosh once in awhile. Very subdued but it's there. OEM Hankook tires may not be the best. They really aren't bad but compared to the SEL Contis they don't quite measure up. Some words of caution and not complaints or cons... The TDI requires some very specific maintenance items. Don't neglect them. Before you purchase a TDI know that it's a rather expensive car that returns great economy, but in no way is the TDI an economy car. Then there's the issue of economy under adverse conditions. The TDI is sensitive to road and weather conditions. All the same it's very unusual to see less than 40 mpg even in the worst weather.

One Of The Best Sedans On The Road. — I've driven a lot of cars and this is one of my all time favorites. The Passat TDI even as a base car comes nicely loaded, the SEL has some added luxuries that make longer drives even nicer. The interior has decent styling and comfortable seats. It's the type of car you can buy and really enjoy driving because it's not breaking your bank account to drive with either the payment or the fuel bill. I would recommend looking into this car if you're in the market for a sedan. Don't be afraid of diesel.

Primary Use: Commuting to work

Pros: Get's amazing mileage. Runs and drives great. Nice interior with easy to use touch screen.

Cons: Could be little more room in the back seats.

Good Family Car — owned the jetta tdi with a 6 speed transmission, prior to buying, the Passat is has a better ride feel and larger back seat, although the jetta had less road noise and the feel of more power with the manual transmission over the auto. I do believe the jetta was better in the snow, although the Passat is no slouch with the traction control.

Primary Use: Commuting to work

Pros: great fuel economy, comfortable

Cons: lack of power,
