Two In The Driveway, Now. — See everything written about the 2011 model. Found another low-mile lease turn-in and snapped it up because Toyota dropped the V6 after 2012. Better yet, this one came pre-wired and with a back-up camera for towing. So we will try to keep the miles down on this one, but it will be the vacation car since it will have the hitch.

Primary Use: Family transportation

Pros: V6 engine, 4WD but still averages 23 MPG in the summer and 21 MPG in the winter

Cons: Last year with the ill-advised swing-out tailgate door, dumb cup holders and not a fan of Keyless ignition, but when you buy lightly used, you take what you can get.

Phenomenal Reliability And Low Cost Of Ownership. — The RAV 4 is a work horse that keeps on giving all the way to resale time. Never a need to TRADE IN a Toyota. Can always be sold privately. People are always looking for these cars and Tacomas with good reason.

Primary Use: Family transportation

Pros: Second one. Runs well. First one Never needed anything fixed. Just maintained. QUALITY RELIABLE vehicle.

Cons: Would have liked the hatch door to open up instead of side ways but would lose the additional storage inside where a tire would otherwise be.

Amazing !!!! — The first time I purchased this vehicle, I need a big car where I can put my kids stuff or our stuff when we go on a long trips and this car can fit everything we need and especially the little compartment thats underneath the trunks. When I say I drive this car alot - I mean A LOT. drove from nyc to Connecticut/New Haven, PA, Washington and even to South Carolina. soon, we'll be making our trips to Canada or heck maybe to California with the car. Bought this car in March and now we're in the month of July, and I already put close to 8000 miles.

Primary Use: Family transportation

Pros: Gas saver. for a 4 cylinder 4wd with a beauty of it, it gives me about 25/26mpg combined between city and highway.

Cons: Nothing negative about this car. Absolute Amazing !

Phenominal Suv For The Money — This is our second RAV and since we obtained a 14 CRV , the wife has decided she likes the newer CRV better. So we may sell the RAV. The Rav 4 has always been a go to mid size SUV for us. I leased a CRV because the new RAVs were $100 more a month comparably equipped They are not THAT much better than a CRV. But at the time Dealers were in love with them. The economy of the RAV 4 is well known from fuel mileage to resale value. I don;t know why we bought a 100K mile Platinum ESC. Likely won't need it. But great for selling privately.Build Quality is excellent. Maintenance was conducted at Toyota. Never needed anything more than standard maintenance.

Primary Use: Family transportation

Pros: Great reliable transportation with great resale value. Just enough power.

Cons: Would prefer the hatch open up but because the spare is on it Must open sideways. Thetrade off is a LOT of cargo room.

2012 Toyota RAV4 Base 4WD Review
GuruWTM8R says:
Had I to do it again, Id aim for a base model with 4WD and an Upgrade Value package (plus optional 5 speed). The V6 is simply overkill, and I now regard it as a liability on mileage and possible unexpected acceleration. The base model is perfectly servicable. And having had a first generation Rav4 for 20 years, there just isnt anything more that is actually required. It is absolutely reliable, low maintenance, fun to drive, flexible in its uses. I will note that Toyota engineers appear to not have a life. They have removed all the places to connect outdoor gear (like canoes or a Yakima rack); I will need to modify the car to add a tie-down or a rack system. Stupid.
