As the flagship trim of the lineup, the 2012 Dodge Durango Citadel comes loaded with all the bells and whistles, yet offers some of the most electrifying driving dynamics in its class. Sporting 84.5 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats folded, a classy cabin and 3 rows of seating for the standard 8 passengers, this well-wrought midsize crossover has “family car” written all over it. Then there are such standard niceties as 20-inch chrome-clad wheels, a power sunroof, power-adjustable front seating, heated front and second-row seats, driver memory settings, and scads of leather slathered all over the seats, heated steering wheel, doors and center console. Add to that heated power-adjustable outside mirrors, front power windows and remote power door locks, as well as a universal remote garage-door opener, remote start, fold-and-tumble reclining second-row seats, fold-flat front passenger seat, power-adjustable telescoping tilt-wheel steering, tri-zone climate control and adaptive cruise control for a result that is entry-level posh. Entertainment, meanwhile, is presented via a 506-watt Alpine system featuring an MP3-capable single-CD player and10 speakers, satellite radio, a 6.5-inch LCD dashboard CD/DVD screen and a USB connection, while the standard Bluetooth hands-free phone technology can be combined with the optional UConnect hands-free system for seamless communications.
Loaded as the 2012 Durango Citadel is, it’s still eligible for an available Trailer Tow Group, with Class IV hitch and 4- and 7-pin wiring harness, Garmin-derived hard-drive-based navigation, second-row captains chairs (late availability, 7-passenger capacity), and rear-seat DVD/Sirius TV entertainment.
Powering all this bling is a standard 3.6-liter ethanol-capable (FFV) V6 mated with a 5-speed shiftable automatic transmission with brake hill-holder. This capable if not overwrought V6 puts out 290 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque, and, boasting variable valve timing (VVT), the six-banger is rated at 16 mpg city/23 highway in its standard rear-wheel-drive (RWD) configuration. Expect 5,000 pounds of max towing capacity when this capable crossover is properly equipped.
If more giddy-up is needed, the 2012 Durango Citadel can be delivered with a 5.7-liter, VVT Hemi V8 and new-for-2012 6-speed shiftable automatic, again with the brake hill-holder. Expect 360 hp and 390 lb-ft of torque out of this potent Hemi, to the tune of 14/20 with cylinder shut-down at cruising speeds. Towing prowess, meanwhile, increases to 7,400 pounds, max, with the proper equipment.
Topping the list of standard safety equipment in the 2012 Durango Citadel are 4-wheel antilock braking (ABS), traction and stability control, 3-row head airbags, front side-mounted airbags and front head-restraint whiplash protection. Further safety features aboard this classy crossover include blind-spot and cross-path warning systems, a rear-view camera and rear parking sensors, xenon high-intensity-discharge (HID) headlights, front fog/driving lights, a post-collision safety system, turn-signal-integrated mirrors and a remote antitheft alarm.
