Powering the Sportage LX is Kia's 140-hp inline four-cylinder (I4) engine. Displacing 2 liters and offering variable valve timing, this modern powerplant is mated to a four-speed automatic transmission that drives the front wheels only. The engine and transmission package is commendably refined, yet it lacks the grunt needed to move the heavy Sportage with any urgency. The lack of ratios in the transmission (most competitors offer five- or even six-speed automatics) hinders both acceleration and fuel economy.
The interior of the Sportage LX is comfortably well equipped, if a little basic. Power accessories are standard, along with cruise control and a decent CD stereo with satellite radio. Options are few; buyers looking for more equipment should explore the upper trim levels.

The 2010 Kia Sportage LX 4WD provides the reassuring security of a seamless, full-time four-wheel-drive system. Those looking for value in a small SUV will find the Sportage LX 4WD offers a healthy list of features for a low price.
The only engine offered in the Sportage LX 4WD is the 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder (I4). This mill makes 140 hp and 135 lb-ft of torque, not quite enough to move the Sportage LX (and its heavy 4WD hardware) around with any verve. Acceleration is sluggish, though the standard five-speed manual transmission makes the most of things. The optional four-speed automatic is quick to shift, but its lack of ratios is a detriment to both fuel economy and performance. The 4WD system is electronically controlled and requires no driver input. It provides excellent traction in slippery conditions, but lacks a low-range transfer case for off-roading.
The 2010 Sportage LX 4WD features a comfortable, though hardly luxurious, interior with plenty of space for errand running or long trips. Power accessories are standard, as are keyless entry and an AM/FM/CD stereo that features satellite radio and an AUX input.

This larger engine drives the front wheels through a four-speed automatic transmission. The increase in power over the four-cylinder Sportage is welcome, yet the V6 still falls short, with too few cubic inches and a lack of ratios in the gearbox.
The interior of the 2010 Sportage LX V6 features such niceties as keyless entry and power accessories. Space is more than adequate for five, though the cargo bay could be larger. Standard safety features include six airbags and traction/stability control.

With only 173 hp on tap from its 2.7-liter V6, the 3,500-pound Sportage EX 4WD struggles to keep up with the pack. Blame the small engine and a four-speed automatic transmission that just doesn't have enough gears make good use of what power is available. The full-time electronic four-wheel-drive system operates without any driver input and provides great traction in slippery conditions.
The interior of the 2010 Sportage EX V6 4WD is a comfortable place to spend time, with upgraded cloth-trimmed seats and a standard power sunroof. Optional leather upholstery looks nice and cleans up well, while the available GPS navigation system will make short work of complex directions.
