Wish I Never Got Rid Of This Car.... — I loved this car for the 77,000 miles that I owned it. I installed a Cobb Accessport and Cobb Downpipe, along with their intake and a front mount intercooler and the car made around 290 wheel horsepower and 330 torque on a conservative dyno. I also averaged about 28 mpg per tank on my commute, I could get 30+ if it was all highway. It was lots of fun, decent space inside, and I would buy another.... Currently waiting to see what "Mazdaspeed" comes out next for 2015+, along with the Subaru STi, & Mitsubishi EVO.

Primary Use: Commuting to work

Pros: Great power, great price, great handling, and even good MPG when you are out of the throttle (I averaged 30 mpg highway).

Cons: If you are into modding, be aware of the PCV/vacuum issue - a downpipe install could cause a smoking turbo.  The only issues I had was the fuel pump wasn't up to par around 65,000 miles (for my boost levels), and the shocks/struts went around 50,000 (but I sometimes had a hitch with 3 bikes on it which probably didn't help).

Nearly Perfect — Best Bang for the Buck. First in class overall in performance. Acceleration, braking , handling make this a fun car. It is also a practical car with the hatchback design. Ride is firm but not uncomfortable, MPG is good for performance car (18 to 31MPG) depending on how heavy you foot is. No problems in over a year. Needed more room so no longer own. Two years and no problems with the Speed3. Great car.

Primary Use: Family transportation

Pros: Speed, handling, practical and economical considering the performance.

Cons: Torque steer (fairly well controlled), transmission shift gate and action could be better.

Everytime I Get Into My Mazdaspeed 3... I Get A Huge Grin On My Face!!! —

Update: Aug. 25, 2010 - My MS3 is almost 3 years old and still going strong :) A little under a year and a half ago I made some upgrades to "Speedy", I added in a Injen Cold Air Intake, a Forge Motorsports ByPass Valve and a sweet short throw shifter (totally fixed the previous "Con" I noted). Those mods have only made "Speedy" even more of a pleasure to drive!!! But remember those mods mean nothing if you can put the power to the ground. The OEM Bridgestone Potenza RE050's were great but at a replacement cost of about US$225 each... they were way out of my price range. I decided to go with some Falken tires. Not bad in the dry but in the wet even when new... they were junk... and only got worse as time went by. I changed them out after about 15,000 miles, and replaced them with some Hankook Ventus V12evos... let me tell you... they are the best bang for your buck in both dry and wet. Search for Car and Driver's Tire Comparison online... they are probably the best tires I ever purchased!!! So to sum up... Mazdaspeed 3 the best car I have ever owned... one of the best I have ever driven... a car I hope to keep for a long long time :) Previous Review: When I was looking for a new car, it was a toss up between the Mazdaspeed 3 and the Impreza WRX. Liked the all-wheel drive of the WRX, but it was a bit more money and the shape of the new model was a tad bit off-putting... it looked like a low rider Lexus SUV. All questions were put to rest the minute I test drove the MS3... the exhilaration was and still is endless. The torque steer in 1st and 2nd gear is tremendous but not unmanageable. 3rd gear is the go to gear for all your overtaking needs :) I think my favorite feature is the "sleeper" look...looks like a Hatchback Mazda3...performs like a BEAST!!!

Pros: Torque, Torque, Torque!!! Handles like if its on rails! Stops better than most supercars. I'm too lazy to write the rest of the Pros but there are so many more!

Cons: Shifter gates could be a bit more precise. Plastic dash makes noise when its cold. OEM tires wear too quickly. Gas Mileage does Suck!!!

Is a great 5star car when not modified. Would love to find a clean low mile first gen example. The second gen has certain advantages but I prefer the sleeper looks of the first gen. Read More
