An Suv That Drives Like A Car. —

Shockingly good handling when coupled with the adaptive suspension. Plenty of power from the 4.8L V8. Truly easy to live with on a day to day basis. Head up display option is a must! Will not buy another BMW or indeed another SUV without this feature. Have stopped looking at the speedo and very handy for the navigation as next turn instruction is also projected. Still irritatingly slow iDrive. Interiors is luxurious and use of soft plastic moulding. Pretty decent sound system. Bluetooth connectivity is not bad. Seating is comfortable with lots of adjustments for front seat. Perforated leather for heat and cool function. 3rd row seats folds into floor and really is OK for only small children. Cargo space is average. After 5 years old, there was significant failures in the adaptive air suspension. We had a particularly bad run with all 4 shocks failing within a 2 year period. Replacement was very costly as you can imagine. The vehicle is great when it is fully functional, but reliability is a significant concern. Despite the failures, we did end up trading it in for a new model 2015 BMW X5, but on a lease. We would only consider a BMW under full warranty.

Primary Use: Family transportation

Pros: Handling is second to none for an SUV. Great power for a normally aspirated SUV.  Luxurious. Love the heads up display.

Cons: Expensive service cost.

2007 Bmw X5 - Excellent, But Not Perfect — I traded in a 1991 Ford Explorer so you might laugh at the comparison -- there is none, obviously. This BMW X5 is a pure dream to drive. It's like it's always waiting to take off, which is frustrating when you're stuck in traffic. But when you hit open highway and can put this marvel to the test, it's fantastic. Go get one. Update: 2013.05.20 Have owned the X5 for 1.5 yrs now and while it is still very fun to drive and the build quality exceeds most other cars, a little of the shine has warn off with small wear and tear items costing far too much to repair. My CPO warrantly also just expired, under which I was able to get several key repairs done for almost free, so the next 6-12 months will be eye-opening on cost if anything goes wrong. Will update again in a year or less.

Primary Use: Commuting to work

Pros: Power, Speed, Suspension, Braking, Engineering, AWD, Styling, Interior features, Sound System, HUD, Navigation, family and cargo space

Cons: the A/C does not get cold enough; air vent controls break easily and are crazy expensive to repair; iDrive is easy to use, but too simplistic vs. competitors

I Love It! — Have only owned for a couple of days, but already am loving it! Power, handling, style, comfort are all excellent. Would like to have better gas mileage, but, hey, it's a V8! This car is a real joy to drive! After six months, and no real adverse weather yet, I can still say I am very pleased with its performance! Put the shift selector in Sport mode, which raises the shift points, and the acceleration is quick! Have a bit of an issue getting the Nav system to reliably read updated map DVDs, but otherwise, the tech aspects are very nice. Had to replace battery (4 years old), which cost a little under $200. Got the rear brakes replaced under warranty. All in all, I am very happy with it. Would definitely buy it again!!!

Primary Use: Commuting to work

Pros: Handles like a Sports Car - one that weighs 2 tons!

Cons: Cost

Nice Sporty Suv —

we have 3 kids and wanted to downsize our suv (used to have a 2004 toyota landcruiser). Looking for a smaller but nice handling SUV. This is just that. You can fit 3 kids in the car comfortably and the handling is just superb. Very nicely built car. Highly recommend. Having now owned the car for a few years, would update my perspective as follows: harsh ride - the X5 takes "sporty" to seriously, as a result the handling is very crisp but the ride is too harsh. On long drives it can actually be uncomfortable. I would also add that the idrive interface for controlling many aspects of the car is maddening. The 3rd row seats are kind of a joke if you have kids. Our kids are ages 8 to 11 and they barely fit. Our kids did not like this car as the room in the 3rd row seat was too cramped. Another thing that drove our kids crazy was the location of the DVD player. The second row could see the screen but not the 3rd row. So overall, after owning the car for a few years, I'd say, that it has great handing, a sporty drive and a 3rd row of seats, but.... the drive is too harsh in my opinion. For the money, I can think of many other luxury SUVs that have great handling but a more comfortable ride.

Pros: handling, build quality, styling

Cons: ride is too stiff

KARLA says:
Its a smaller SUV. It doesnt have the same feel as my Jeep Grand Cherokee -- it feels lightweight and like its not really stuck to the ground. Compared to a BMW car/sedan, these SUVs dont compare. The sedans are what you want from a Beemer, but the SUVs just dont feel right -- they dont feel like youre in a luxury car like the sedans do. Im just not a fan of the BMW X-series SUVs.

JacqLea says:
I never really liked BMWs, but this version of the X5 I particularly dont like. It doesnt handle very well and has had a ton of mechanical issues, the latest being the steering column. Granted, its ten years old, German cars are supposed to be built to last. Also, the front and back seats are very hard, not good for long trips, and the plastic around the gear shift is peeling away. Although its an expensive car, I dont think it was worth the price-not even for the loud growl it gives when you hit the gas.

Power Ranked 2010 Honda Accord Crosstour EX-L worse.
"X5 has more horsepower, I think. Its slower to accelerate, but it really kicks it once its in motion. "
Handling Ranked 2010 Honda Accord Crosstour EX-L better.
"X5 has terrible handling and a poor turning radius, while the Crosstour handles turns and maneuvers like a champ."
Looks/Style Ranked 2010 Honda Accord Crosstour EX-L better.
"BMWs are renowned for their classy look, but the rounded, uncommon curves of the Crosstour make it an eye-catcher wherever it goes."
Front Seats Ranked 2010 Honda Accord Crosstour EX-L better.
"Crosstour seats are way more comfortable, albeit have a little less space. "
Back Seats Ranked 2010 Honda Accord Crosstour EX-L worse.
"X5 has more space in the back."
Cargo Capacity Ranked 2010 Honda Accord Crosstour EX-L better.
"The trunk is large for a sedan. Maybe not more spacious than the X5, but its bigger than proportional for its class of car."
Family Car Ranked 2010 Honda Accord Crosstour EX-L worse.
"It has more room overall; the Crosstour isnt a car for big families or cargo transport. "
Value Ranked 2010 Honda Accord Crosstour EX-L better.
"Hondas already have a good reputation for being safe and lasting forever, which helps, but this car also has the looks, speed, and grace to well-match its value. "
Would Buy Ranked 2010 Honda Accord Crosstour EX-L better.
"Its less expensive, has less issues and less costly in the long wrong, has neat gadgets like seat warmers (no GPS or backup camera, though), offers a smooth ride, has better acceleration and handling, and just steals the show on the road. "
