The RX 400h was the latest innovation from the Lexus sport utility line. The original RX crossover had quickly become the top selling Lexus in the late nineties, despite sluggish performance slightly inefficient fuel consumption. The new RX was poised to address both problems, with a cutting-edge new hybrid technology that would boost both power and gas mileage. The FWD RX was clearly an on-road vehicle, regardless of its SUV classification. The entire RX line had seen great success in combining an SUV look and spaciousness with a Lexus luxury car feel.
Both under its hood and throughout, the RX 400h housed some unique hybrid technology. The 400h utilized both a gasoline powered 3.3 liter V-6 and three electric motor/generators. The product of this synergy was 268 horsepower and 33/28 mpg fuel efficiency. This additional power was most useful in boosting low and mid-speed range acceleration. The braking technology helped store and conserve electric energy which is typically spent during braking.
Owners who were willing to pay the considerably higher price over the RX 330 were pleased to find the abundance of standard features inside. RX 330 options like leather interior trim, a roof rack, a one-touch moonroof, a DVD capable navigation system with rear backup camera, a six-disc CD changer, xenon headlamps, and 18-inch alloy wheels were available in every 400h. Common issues for owners were space (the RX has no third row option like the larger LX or GX), a surprising amount of engine noise, and the sticker price. The price is substantial, but since the vehicle is designed to last at least 300,000 miles, gas savings should provide a counterbalance over time.

The hybrid RX 400h was new for 2006, offering a more fuel efficient version of the best selling Lexus SUV. The RX series was pioneered in the late 90s as a crossover (the original automotive meaning of 'hybrid') between luxury cars and SUVs. The new 400h was identical to the rest of the RXs, which saw little body style change over time, but it was laden with advanced hybrid technology and abundant standard features.
The RX 400h was the highest priced model in the Lexus small SUV line, but much of the RX 330's options were now standard, including leather interior trim, a roof rack, a one-touch moonroof, a DVD capable navigation system with rear backup camera, a six-disc CD changer, xenon headlamps, and 18-inch alloy wheels. However, the Hybrid Synergy Drive technology is the true marvel. The 400h housed a 3.3 liter gas-powered V-6, aided by three electric motor generators. The combination produced 268 horsepower, but offered gas mileage of 33/28 mpg.
Although this RX has full time all wheel drive, owners have found that it is better left on the road. It does not have the ground clearance or differential setup to really offer any enjoyment on trails or bumps. The RX is a capable performer in adverse weather conditions, and offers a fine alternative to other family vehicles.
