2005 Volkswagen Lupo Review

Fun Fun Fun — Great little car, excellent on gas, fairly well build, due to its light weight very peppy and quick, if somewhat noisy on the highway (of course, at speeds over 140 kms/hr). I've driven the car to Canada (Kitchener, Ontario) and back to Mexico (Hermosillo, Sonora, a 4000 km trip one way) without ever worrying about its reliability. My wife and I also took it to L.A. this past summer (2007), again, no complaints. My only complaints are that it has no cruise control or airbags and its a tad to narrow for my bulky frame. :)

Pros: Great on gas, cheap to insure, fun to drive, a typical Volkswagen. And while in Canada, a big hit, since it is not imported into the Great White North.

Cons: Small!!!!!!!!!!! No passive safety features (none available from the manufacturer) and no cruise control for those long trips.

2005 Volkswagen Lupo Review

Brilliant Little Car — This is my second Volkswagen Lupo. My first was a base 1.0e with some options which was my first car. The 1.0e was a great car but when I heard the Lupo was being discontinued in 2005 I decided that I should replace it with a more powerful, newer Lupo. I eventually decided upon a 1.4 16v Sport again I had to add options as the standard specification was a little stingy! Compared to the 1.0e the new car is much quicker (it has 100ps against 50ps for the 1.0e) whilst maintaining everything I enjoyed about the first Lupo. The interior is very well design with a very stylish facia built from very high quality materials even now there are now creaks, squeaks or rattles. The seats are very well padded which means they are comfortable over long distances. The luggage compartment is small but this is hardly a surprise when you consider the dimensions of the car. The rear seat is designed for two and is quite comfortable although knee room is tight behind a tall driver. Compared to a Ford Ka of a similar age the Lupo is more grown up to drive, the car is not as sharp in the bends but conversely the Lupo is more comfortable and controlled at higher speeds. My car returns around 42mpg from every tank. In traffic the car is very easy to drive and is very refined, the engine only really becomes intrusive at much higher speeds. The Lupo is pleasingly nippy around town and quite happy to pull higher speeds. My only concern about the driving characteristics of this car is the brakes. From higher speeds an emergency stop results in the back going very light and makes the car feel a little unstable, I would, however, like to point out this is in extreme situations. The car has now covered 83,000miles and aside from normal servicing has required a couple of visits to the dealer, these were to deal with a broken pedal box and a fault with a bearing in the gearbox, these are common faults. The dealership that looks after the car is very good although recent services have been stupidly expensive! However I have tried a few other dealers and found they are a little hit and miss, one even argued that my car was a GTI which was a little concerning! The residual values are also very good I paid nearly £11,000 for this car and when it was recently valued the dealer suggested the car was worth £3500 or a lot more privately. That is 32% over nearly 5 years and 83,000miles. Diesel models and GTI's perform even better. I would happily recommend a Lupo to anyone, I enjoy the car so much that when I bought my new car I decided to keep the Lupo aswell. It is a great little car and I would not want to be without it! **Update** On the 8th of March I was involved in a serious car accident. An HGV weighing in excess of 44tonnes hit my Lupo whilst stationary at roadworks. The Lupo was written off but it protected me from the truck.

Primary Use: Commuting to work

Pros: Appearance, Comfort, Performance, Build Quality, General Running costs, Driving characteristics

Cons: Not much, braking performance, some of the dealers and the cost of the last service.
