Great Gas Mileage, But Many Mechanical Problems — I traded my Passat for the Jetta TDI with only around 20,000 miles on it due to horrible electrical system problems. The car got excellent mileage (38 MPG combined city/highway!) and had 247 lb*ft of torque! The torsion bar suspension left something to be desired.

Pros: Great gas mileage, looks pretty good

Cons: Horrible electircal and heater core issues

A Good Sedan With A Great Interior And Awd — We liked this car so much, we bought it twice. (We had a 2001 and replaced it with a 2004.) It was comfortable and quiet, and had a great interior. The AWD and traction control combined for a very secure ride in rain and snow.

Pros: AWD traction
Excellent handling/ride compromise
Beautiful interior

Cons: Heavy and a bit slow

Best Vehicle I've Ever Owned! — I absolutely love my VW - we have 3 in our household. It is the 2nd brand new car I've purchased - ever, I've had it 3 1/2 years and every time I get in it - it's like the first time. I bought a brand new Saturn Ion just before the VW - drove it for 6 months and after driving a VW Golf, I was thoroughly convinced I had to dump the Saturn and get myself a VW. I originally leased this car, and ended up buying out the lease early because I loved the car so much. I am not sold on the styling change after 04, they look more like Japanese cars to me now....but nothing beats the engineering of a VW.

German Masterpiece!! — I traded my 2000 Lexus RX 300 in for a used 2004 Passat W8 4motion wagon. What a beautiful and meticulously crafted piece of machinery. It drives and handles like a sports sedan without the harsh ride qualities associated with a sports sedan. The engine has tons of low end torque and is as smooth as silk. It has tons of cargo room and plenty of back seat room for my kids. I also love the styling especially the rims and the meaty looking tires. Great vehicle!!!

Comfortable German Car — We owned this car for about 5 years, just enough to pay it off. It was a fine car, but had some quality issues (I thought). The CV boots never lasted very long. The transmission (4 speed automatic) would not unlock correctly when you came to a stop and there was nothing they could do about it (they said-the Dealer), short of a $4500.00 replacement. No way. It was great other than the trans and the cv boots until the Generator packed it in at about 56,000 miles. The non-dealer garage that replaced it made a mess of it and we had to have it all done again, this time at the dealer, after a year of it. It was costly, but it seemed the issues were mostly fixed. Too bad about it's bad points, because we liked the car otherwise.

Primary Use: Family transportation

Pros: Comfortable, handling, power.

Cons: Transmission.  Mileage.  Cost for repairs.

The V6 engine (which is otherwise stellar) creates way too much torque steer and wheel spin on the front wheel drive Passat. Also, the DSG transmission (V6 model) is jerky at lower speeds. The 1.8... Read More
