2004 Mazda MAZDA3 S HatchbackReview

2004 Mazda3 S — Still enjoying driving the car after 3 years. The suspension is getting a little loose though in its age, so there may be some need to stiff that up some in the near future. Otherwise the car has been very reliable.

Pros: Plenty of space, nice styling

Cons: Could use and extra 20hp in stock form to really give it a good platform.

Its Like A Cheap M3 — Mazda's next generation of compact sedans is a serious evolution over the Protege/626 models. The Mazda 3 features a more european styling, complemented by Mazda's continuously tight handling. Pairing the car with a stock 2.3L with 5 speed manual transmision with short shift gearbox provides a serious GT feeling to the new generation.

Pros: Power, Handling, Styling

Cons: Not designed for anyone over 6' tall

One Of The Best Cars I've Ever Owned. — This is an amazing car! Optioned to the gills for less than $19k, and far better equipped than cars costing much more. This car has a six speaker stereo system with six CD indash changer, electroluminescent instruments, tire pressure monitoring, xenon (HID) headlights, automatic brake force distribution, eight airbags, ABS, power everything, moonroof. The only options I didn't get were the automatic, the navigation system, and the leather seats. I wanted the leather, but couldn't find one silver with black leather with all the options I wanted.

Primary Use: Commuting to work

Pros: Great fuel economy (for me, 33 mpg combined), ROCK SOLID reliability (70,000 trouble free miles so far), good looks, good  performance, HID headlights, huge glovebox.

Cons: Rust.  The car started rusting within two years of purchase, despite my excellent wash/wax regimen.  I brought it to the attention of the service department and the dealership owner (this was at Seacoast Mazda in Portsmouth, New Hampshire) numerous times over several years, but they did nothing for me.  Canadian Mazdas that suffered this rust problem were repaired, since it was a very common defect with the 2004 and 2005 Threes, but Mazda of America steadfastly refused to stand behind the vehicles.

Despite the mechanical reliability, I will NOT buy another Mazda because of this poor customer service.

Dependable. With over 90000 miles the interior showed very little wear. The exterior held up well also.

My first Mazda 3 Active was a 2004 model. Only a pleasure to drive, fair petrol consumption and a wonderful family car.

I absolutely love my Mazda. It was fun to drive. The 4 speed automatic was lacking while pulling out. But was very responsive in second and third gear. It handled beautifully in and out of turns. Ive owned and Ive driven (A LOT) of other vehicles in the same class and have owned multiple of different year Mazda3s, PR-5s and protégé. This year make and model was by far my favorite of any other vehicle in its class. It also was. Probably the best in all weather conditions also...
