2004 Lincoln Navigator Trims and Specs

There is no such thing as a basic Navigator, but the Luxury 4x2 was, relative to the other trims, the most basic of the 2004 offerings. Nonetheless it came stacked with an impressive array of features: two rows of leather seating with power-adjust and power lumbar support in front, a flat-folding third-row seat, heated power-folding side mirrors, and a roof rack.

As with all '04 Navigators, the power came from a 5.4-liter V8 yielding 300 horsepower and 355 lb.-ft. of torque for a maximum tow capacity of 8,600 pounds. A fully independent suspension with load-leveling made for a smooth and almost car-like ride. Buyers of the Luxury 4x2 were able to add some pretty fancy options: power-deployable running boards and heaters and coolers for the fronts seats. Stability control, a sunroof, and a rear-seat DVD player were also available.

In exchange for a few thousand dollars, the Ultimate trim levels of the 2004 Navigator offered the pinnacle of SUV luxury as Lincoln saw it. Most of these added amenities were preceded by the word power: power-deployable running boards, power liftgate, power sunroof, and a power-folding third row bench seat. Electronic stability control, heated and cooled front seats, and high-intensity gas-discharged headlights also were part of the package.

The rear-wheel drive Ultimate came with the same V8 engine and 4-speed automatic transmission as every other Navigator. Its 300 horses and 355 lb.-ft. of torque (at 2750 rpm) made it a great choice for families with a boat or camper to pull, as its tow capacity is 8,600 pounds. To complete the package they might have opted for the available voice-activated navigation system to help them find their way in all of those weekend and vacation pursuits. Other options were a DVD entertainment system for the second-row seat, a Class III/IV trailer tow package, and chrome wheels.

Many buyers of new '04 Navigators who had a budget on the lower end of the scale were content to go without a bell here and a whistle there. But many SUV-buyers, even those with no intention of ever leaving the pavement, are not willing to go without four-wheel drive, especially if they live in areas that frequently get snow.

The Luxury 4WD trim fit those buyers' needs, with its Control Trac four-wheel drive system. Although it offers the traditional 4x4 settings of 2 High, 4 High, and 4 Low, the system also has an Automatic setting, which functions like all-wheel drive.

Other equipment that came standard on this vehicle included heated power side mirrors, front and second-row captain's-style seats in leather, and a fully independent suspension with load-leveling. Available options were power-deployable running boards, heaters and coolers for the front seats, a sunroof, stability control, and a rear-seat DVD entertainment system.

In order to truly be the Ultimate, an SUV must have four-wheel drive. The Navigator Ultimate 4x4 has that and a ton more. It was equipped with many plush amenities, highlighted by power-deployable running boards, which had been seen before on motor homes but not on a passenger vehicle.

Speaking of passengers, the Navigator Ultimate 4WD can carry up to eight, thanks to a nice third-row seat that folds and opens at the touch of a button. The second row came as two captain's chairs with a console between them (like the front row), but buyers were free to order a split-folding second-row seat instead at no added cost.

The Control Trac 4x4 system was made with an automatic four-wheel drive setting as well as the expected 2 High, 4 High, and 4 Low. The SUV's 300-horsepower V8 puts out 355 lb.-ft. of torque, and this full-sized 4x4 could pull up to 8,300 pounds.

Some of the other standard features on the Ultimate trims were the heated and cooled front seats (leather, of course), high-intensity headlights, and electronic stability control. Its interior was made to please the eye, with burled wood and satin-nickel accents. Optional equipment on this posh set of wheels consisted of upgraded chrome wheels, a DVD entertainment system, a navigation system, and a trailer-tow package.
