The IS 300 SportCross returned for its third year of production in 2004. This first Lexus wagon was not a family hauler. It was crafted for the same purpose as the sedan: performance. With respect to price, IS 300 sedans and wagons were the introductory Lexus offerings, placed a slot below the ES sedan.
The same 3.0 liter straight six power plant returned, making 215 horsepower and providing 218 pound-feet of torque. Extra weight and aerodynamics issues increased the wagon's 0 to 60 time by about half a second over the sedan, at 7.9. All ISs were rear wheel drive, but they were available with either a four-speed automatic or five-speed manual transmission. This was the last offering of the limited slip differential with the five-speed. The wagon's extra weight did not lead to lost fuel economy: it was observed at 19/25 mpg.
The primary advantage over the IS sedan was cargo space. It doubled with the wagon. Like the sedan, the SportCross faced 'value in its class' questions when compared to the comparably priced BMW 3-Series. The IS series had provided Lexus with a unique new model, but falling sales suggested that compact sport sedan shoppers were more willing to invest in the German competition.
