Fun, Safe, Great Fun In The Snow & Even Park On Snow Banks — not so impressed of late: In the last 5 months I have had to rebuild the transmission, change the oil pan due to off-roading on a construction site (ok-my bad), the battery has been changed yet I step on the petal in the morning and it says "you wanna what?" , the motor has been replaced for the co-pilot window and now the pilot window needs replacing... quite frankly, what is next? ! " smooth, quiet, luxury drive-as Jeeps go" ---> into the garage...

Pros: impressive interior-always get comments as people go to sit in.

Cons: 19.5 kilometers to the liter... make a hybrid guys!

A Typical Jeep Now W/ Luxury —

Performance is brisk with the V8, but since the car is so heavy is seems burdened at some points. Gas mileage is dismal, but you know what you are getting into when you buy a car like that. In my 16 months of ownership, both rear axles have leaked. I have gotten on fixed and will soon get the other fixed. If you do not have a warranty, this will cost you around $500 at any Jeep certified dealer. I absolutely love the curved yet sculpted lines of the Grand Cherokee. The clean halogen headlights are great. The chrome is a nice accent to the car without overdoing it. The 4wd capability is wonderful. I have the Quadra-Drive system and it makes driving in snow, fun. This car exudes luxury from the carpets to the dash. The materials used on the interior are right on in all the right places. However, some cheap plastic bits still give the Grand Cherokee that old school rugedness that so many people like. This car certainly has upsides and downsides. However, one thing does put it above so many other SUVs. That is...the Jeep badge. People can almost tell what kind of person you are by the car that you drive. Driving a Jeep says that you are concerned about utility, comfort (if you drive a Grand Cherokee) and that you enjoy the power you find under the hood of the car. It says that you don't take yourself too seriously. It shows that with you, "what you see is what you get."

Primary Use: Family transportation

Pros: Looks, 4wd, luxury, V8 power, radio (10 disc changer, sirius satellite)

Cons: heavy, gas mileage, top heavy (what SUV isn't)

2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4WD Review
GuruSJXZX says:
Very reliable in heavy snow and all weather. Still see alot of this model from 1998-2005 in Upstate NY. The only thing that kills the exterior is the road salt. The I6 engine just doesnt quit. Both of my 2004s did have drive shaft problem starting at 150,000mi. But they were easy to replace. Roadsalt also kills the mufflers and the O2 sensor goes off alot.

1999 through 2004 are nearly identical They age well Ours is a 2000 that some geriatric fool totaled We will do whatever it takes to replace it. 2005 & up is a different car I know nothing about but I haven’t heard anything good

Power Ranked 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee better.
"The horsepower is claimed to be 235 increases to 265 but I can’t tell the difference. The engine ages very well. The inline 6 is a total unknown and I have heard nothing good. The 4.7V8’s sell for a lot more and I think are worth it. Jeep engines in general are not too powerful but last forever The 4.7 is even more so. It is also surprisingly brisk to drive. Can’t comment on maintenance because I have never heard of one needing repair. It’s aluminum with overhead cams and probably not easy to rebuild. "
Handling Ranked 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee better.
"Get serious. Telling any difference is virtually impossible. If one handles better it likely has better tires (compound and design, wear is undetectable on clean dry pavement). On wet everything matters. I commuted to a ski area for 20 years. Compared to everything but my daughter’s Cayenne the snow/ice performance of the quadra-track is unmatched. Tires are the big thing but the torque distribution is outstanding. I’m talking handling; for overall traction true comparisons are difficult because getting stuck is mostly tires and common sense. In direct back to back comparison my wife’s Grand Cherokee is clearly superior to my Wranglers. We use the Cherokee for shopping in real horrible conditions mostly because of control but it is also better for traction That surprised me. Handling yes but absolute traction too I did not expect a clear difference. "
Looks/Style Ranked 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee better.
"Entirely personal taste, the chrome grill details change. There is a difference between the limited and Laredo mostly with the plastic molding matching the body color on the limited which is likely why they sell for more. The paint and plastic match for color and finish so well it is almost scary. They come in many different colors which change yearly. The paint lasts forever. It is a good thing because color match on a repair is a nightmare. If someone hits you select the repair shop with care, get recommendations, past samples and make eye contact with the painter, not office staff. Find someone who has painted one and if they say color match is easy go elsewhere. The factory color code is no use whatever. A good paint store has to do it and it’s uncommon to get it on the first try. Better off not to hold the shop to a set price much less even think about going with the low bid. "
Front Seats Ranked 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee better.
"They are hard to even tell apart. It is the same deal as a early vs late of the same year with a normal car. "
Back Seats Ranked 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee better.
"There are differences but telling one year from another is beyond me. The seat upholstery condition is like rings on a tree as an age or condition determination. The front part of the drivers side front outside panel and where it meets the size of the cushion is usually the first indication of wear and condition. Since the back seat never shows wear the contrast can be a problem when wear shows. "
Cargo Capacity Ranked 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee better.
"Identical "
Family Car Ranked 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee better.
"Truly identical. You would think after building the same design for 6 years they would do it a little better. The thing about a 6 year production run is they should be solving subtle issues and the last ones improve. The reality is they all benefit. Since they are so identical and there are so many and many owners are very skilled. There is nothing that goes wrong for an individual owner that has’t happened to someone else. Through the internet trouble shooting and fixes can be shared. The blend doors in the heating A/C system will fail it might be at 6 years or 16 but it will happen and someone will tell you how to fix even without taking the dashboard out for $1,600 labor retail. Some of those people even know what they are doing (not a given on the internet). "
Value Ranked 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee better.
"None If you find an ignorant seller they may think their earlier car is less desirable and sell it for less. Likely if they will they haven’t enough knowledge to take really good care of it. Someone that thinks the late car is more valuable doesn’t know the vintage intimately. Mileage is sort of similar. If the mileage is really low, on a 20 year old car why was it parked for how long. Even these cars do not age well while parked. "
Would Buy Ranked 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee better.
"There is no reason at all. I like the plain 2000 and later ones have chrome trim but it is personal taste The limited is a lot nicer than the Laredo but it’s largely cosmetic. Choose carefully though because you likely will live with it for a long time. "

Loved my limited, just bought another one, but this time a 2000 with only 116,000miles on it. This will be my 3rd Jeep Grand Cherokee. For our weather here in Upstate NY (Adirondack/Saratoga region) this model gets me to work safely everyday, in all kinds of weather. Alot are still on the road.

JL_Oake says:
The Jeep Grand Cherokee is just better! It is just as capable off road as it's Wrangler counterpart with the Selec-Trac Part-Time 4 wheel drive and serious suspension off road, and is more classy then the other 2. I love all Jeeps, but I must say, the 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee has to be one of my tops picks! "No road, no problem"
