Love It — I purchased this truck, used, 3 weeks ago and i like the way it rides and drives. The sonic blue paint really scratches easy. It sure gets a lot of attention. I have also found that using the turtle wax ice detailer helps with taking care of the paint job. i drive about 100 miles a day to work and this puppy gets a lot of attention.

Owner for 0 years, 3 months

Pros: more space than that piece of junk escort i was driving all in all i really love this truck.

Cons: could get better mileage - this sonic blue paint scratches easy.

Best Domestic Light Truck — I like this more than the S10. Still a lot of plastic (can't get away from that, so I'll shut up from now on), quite reliable, good money.

Pros: Good truck

Cons: Nothing big comes to mind

2003 Ford Ranger Xlt — Reliable, parts are inexpensive, truck is easy to maintain. Tune-ups; spark plugs, plug wires are easily changed, shocks are easy to change. New radiator, hoses and clamps - cooling system is serviced for years to come. New front and rear brakes, even rebuilt the alternator to save cost over the replacement.

Pros: Small truck, easy on fuel, inexpensive maintenance

Cons: Poor seating in fold down rear seats

Best Mid-sized 4x4 Truck I've Owned, But Would Buy Full Size In The Future —

I have been a very pleased owner of the XLT 4.0L V6 SuperCab 4x4 Ranger. I do not have experience with other versions of this truck which are many. I purchased the vehicle new from the dealer and have owned it for 93,000 miles, mostly garaged. I took the vehicle off road about one every 2 weeks, but did not heavily load it frequently. I purchased the Ford Workshop Manual to perform nearly all of the vehicle maintenance myself with decent mechanical tallent, but very little experience or any formal mechanical training. I performed nearly all the vehicle maintenance myself and ended up with very reasonable costs of ownership as a result. Parts are readily available for this vehicle both new and used. I previously owned a foriegn vehicle and never will again due to the difficulty and extra expense of obtaining service and parts. The vehicle did experience a leak between the transmission and the transfer case (4x4 drive) which I had repaired by the dealer at a cost for about 1300 dollars. One of the fron wheel bearings went bad at about 70,000 miles which I believe is consitent if not overdue for these vehicles. I replaced both front wheel bearings with Timken bearings and would recomend any owner due the same. Overall I would make the same purchase decision again to buy this vehicle over the competition that was made at the same time in the same price range.

Primary Use: Commuting to work

Pros: Good fuel economy when towing. 4 wheel Drive is adequate for off-road conditions and 4 wheel low range suplies tremendous tourque for a midsized truck.  Relatively simple and inexpensive to maintain.  No major suprises or issues since I've owned new for 93,000 miles.

Cons: Included Running Boards rust too easily, fuel economy could be better, but seems competitive for the mid-sized 4x4 truck market.  Even with 4.10 ration limited-slip rear axle the rear tires are very easy to spin on wet pavement with All Terrain Tires, I've never tested this with standard radials which would likely perform better.  The clear coating on the aluminum wheels wears off or cracks making cleaning or repairing difficult or impossible for the average owner.  Rear Jump seats are useful only as a last resort.

Worth Getting One — I got this truck in June of '10, so far it's been very handy and no problems yet. Only thing I wish it had cruise control, it's kind of a pain on long drives. Hope to have it for a long time.

Primary Use: Commuting to work

Pros: only has 45,000 miles

Cons: Gas mileage could be better

Handling Ranked 2003 Ford Ranger 2 Dr XL Extended Cab SB worse.
"Its a nice dependable little truck, really not for heavy duty but excellent for light service."
Back Seats Ranked 2003 Ford Ranger 2 Dr XL Extended Cab SB worse.
"My 03 Ford Ranger Edge Flarestep has the 3.0 flexfuel engine and has 571,000 certified Carfax miles and runs just great. It handles and rides much better than my 09 Ranger with 187, 000 which is a great little truck but lacks the power but is dependable as can be. Its all in the maintenance of keeping it running. Its a machine and all machnes wear out one way or another but you have to spend the money to bring it up to working order."
