Beast — Overall the E46 M3 is a great car. I'm actually looking forward to purchase another. Except, hardtop coupe this time. Its fast, amazing handling, sounds great, and not bad on gas consumption. Would definitely recommend to anyone. Best car out there in my opinion (aside from the E30 M3 hehe).

Primary Use: Sport/fun (spirited driving, track racing, off-roading, etc.)

Pros: Anything and everything. Literally.

Cons: Nothing. Car is perfect :')

I Love This Car — What more can you say about this car? Having driven all of them, I think the E46 M3 is the best balance of power/weight, handling and looks of all the M3s. The SMG transmission takes a little learning, but after that it's fantastic. Driving this car is the most fun you can have with your clothes on.... Three years after I first wrote this review, I still have this car and I still love it. With the top down at intersections, people tell me how great it looks. It's still just really fun to drive. I don't drive it every day, but the only major maintenance expense has been $600 to repair a failed gear in the folding top mechanism. I have driven many high performance cars, some faster, some more exotic but nothing better balanced. The brilliance is in the integration of all the things that matter.

Primary Use: Sport/fun (spirited driving, track racing, off-roading, etc.)

Pros: Beautiful, fast, fantastic handling, and my golf clubs fit in the trunk

Cons: Have to learn the SMG

Powerful And Fun — Like the quality and handling. At times the "excess" power is fun but not in the USA highways :( Love the different options to switch gears manually on steering wheel or shift knob as well as auto mode. Convertible is always fun. Mine is probably the best in the market due to the extreme good care as well as the low miles.

Pros: Handling and power are graet in this car, plus being a convertible is an amazing experience

Cons: Have to grab the steering wheel with both hands due to the power.

Loved my M3. I was amazing but I'll take a 911 as long as it's of high trim. My friends MB c32 AMG was aweful. $ for $ the M3 is the best but if you have the money the porsche can't be touched.

2003 BMW M3 Review
Nate says:
Very peppy even at low rpms but like any BMW, especially the 6 cylinders, they really come alive above 4,000 rpm. Awesome look, the best looking M3 imo, absolutely amazing manual gearbox. The gears in the M are extremely close together and very tight feeling when you shift, the way a sports car should feel, and it makes it that much easier to slam gears without that extra wiggle room in the shift linkage between 2&3 or 4&5th. Realistically though, most of us were not born into driving M cars and have grown up driving 325s or other non M bmws where the linkage can be more sloppy so when you first drive an manual M its very easy to accidentally shift from 2nd into 5th gear because thats where 3rd gear normally is in any other manual BMW. This happens to the best of us new M drivers and you get it down after awhile. The M3 is a pure joy to drive because even though it is not, it feels very light, it;s easily maneuverable and it loves to chirp gears even when you are driving it conservatively. In my experience the most enjoyable part of driving the E46 M3 was the amazing sound of the straight 6, that incredible tuned sound the independent throttle bodies make in sport mode at 3500 rpm and WOT when the vanos really starts to open the valves is unlike any other intake sound i have ever heard. Before driving the M3 i was obsessed with having the right exhaust note but this motor has completely changed the way i listen to cars now. The M3 exhaust is like any other BMW straight 6, no matter what you do and how much money you spend, you will still have that low rpm rasp and then about 3-3500 rpm and up it turns into everything you were hoping for, a sound that no american car can recreate. A lot of people dont care for the classy bimmer rasp but it is the sound of our people and I was on the verge of accepting that by the time I sold my M3. If you really dont like the exhaust rasp, buy an M5, thats exactly what I did and Im willing to bet, like myself, you wont look back.

Power Ranked 2000 BMW M5 better.
".......the 2 extra cylinders with the added 61 hp and 85 lb ft of torque."
Family Car Ranked 2000 BMW M5 better.
"You can actually comfortably seat people behind you, the trunk is huge, the car doesnt shake at high speeds the ride is wayy more smooth. The sound dampening is so incredible that you can run a straight pipe all the way out and still have a quiet conversation inside the car. Or on the other hand, you can wait for the wife to get off the phone with her friend outside the car while you blast the radio as loud as it goes and shell hardly hear it. The REST button pumps in residual heat from the engine block through the cabin to keep the family warm while the car is off and you are in the store. Its pretty decent in the snow, dont even try that in the m3 and it has rear sunshades to keep the baby from baking in the sun on road trips. Just to brush the surface, there is so much more. Buy the M3 while youre in school, graduate with the M5."
