Defective Design Jetta, Difficult Front Clearance — addendum. brakes on this car really superior. one nagging problem- the front air dam, just below the grille, nothing but trouble. drags on the common pkg-lot dividers (those cement jobs, ca 5' long they move around) any obstacle more than a few inches ht. tears the whole works loose-sound damper in the wheel well, attachment to the inside fender edge. this prob ,may have been corrected in later Jettas, but man, is it ever a nuisance!!!

Bought Used, Best Car We Ever Owned, But Ex. Dealer Support Was Part Of It, Dealer Now Changed Hands — this has been a wonderful car--built in Wolfsburg which is probably why. ex. pwr (old couple) good economy, needs to be roomier espec for rear seat passengers.

Pros: handling, comfort, quiet, ex. mechanically so far. elec. system--not so sure.

Cons: more room, espec in back seat.

12 Years Old And I Love It! Great First Car —

I purchased this car 12 years old with only 86,500 miles on it from a local dealership for $3,000. The AC was out ($53 control panel fixed it) and the ignition switch needed replacing ($50). My check engine light came on the first day I had it, from an o2 and knock sensor code, and that's when I discovered you cant use regular gas in these. They require premium to run properly. My fault for not checking. Since then, it's been downhill. I'm on my third alternator, both downstream and upstream O2's replaced, knock sensor, a dash sensor, the inside is very cheaply made. No cup holders? Dont get me wrong, I love the car. It gets great gas mileage for being twelve years old - I average 25mpg. It's also extremely cute. The electricity works perfect, interior wise it's in good shape with no cracks in the dash or leather. The original radio is still working well with nice sounding speakers. I've simply put a lot into maintenance already. Aesthetic issues include the fabric on the roof coming off at the edges, the center console is broken, and there is some minor paint chipping on the hood. The passenger and rear doors are odd, and require that you push them in before opening them. They do work, though. The trunk is very spacious and that's extremely nice, since the inside of the car is built small. Overall, I would recommend this car to someone looking for a fun, cute daily drive that will take care of them as long as they take care of it.

Primary Use: Commuting to work

Pros: Reliable, fuel economy, great engine, comfortable, aesthetically pleasing

Cons: AC control panel and ignition switch went out before 100k, some cheap parts (center console broke, some issues with door handles)

Black Jetta 1.8 Turbo — I like the look of the car and it was comfortable in the front but the back doesnt have a lot of leg room for an adult. It doesnt fit more than 5 people and the 5th one is pushing it. The build quality is great, it handles very well and is really awesome on gas. I felt very safe driving it

Primary Use: Commuting to work

Pros: Fast, reliable

Cons: Being that its a German car with turbo, it requires an oil change more frequently than the 3000 mark

2002 Volkswagen Jetta GLS Review
Before the interior option for leather was changed after 2005 to leatherette, this was the real deal. All black interior on my ride, and I cared for the leather routinely, the car was lovingly surrendered at nearly 190k miles. The drivers seat had visible cracks, but no rips or sagging. The power was not excessive, but the size of the vehicle was easy to maneuver, with fewer blind spots than newer models. Catalytic converter was known to fail, and VW corrected this. There were a few things that no one ever figured out about my particular Jetta: The engine would idle randomly between 3rd and 4rd, drop speed, and then kick back in. This went on for over 100,000 miles. Later, my speedometer became erratic and the cruise control would respond accordingly. After throwing money at it, no one fixing it, and using an app and accelerometer on my smartphone, the 02 was giving up for the newer 07.

Jetta was a bulky car and not fun to drive. Suspension was not the greatest. Radio was good .Good on gas and strong engine. Cost of repairs were affordable.
