A Real Disappointment —

I bought this car at the beginning of January to replace my previous MG as I wanted a reliable car which would still be as fun as my MG. Unfortunately this hasn't been the case. The car's performance is very disappointing - it might be a 1.8 but it doesn't feel like it. It feels a lot slower than my MG (also a 1.8) and far less lively. The engine has very little torque - you get a burst of power at about 3.5k rpm and that's it. The car is very low geared - 3.5k rpm at 70mph - but it's still lifeless. The brakes aren't very good and they heat up and fade very readily. The handling is sloppy - it has rather soft suspension and it pitches and dives when moving quickly. The traction control is a nightmare too, cutting in very frequently. The car has an irritating flat spot low down in the rev range so it's difficult to pull away quickly. If you rev it, the traction control kicks in and greatly reduces the revs so you just sit in the middle of the road. The accelerator has a very delayed response - press it and it takes a good couple of seconds to respond then another few seconds for the engine to catch up. Build quality is OK. Nothing major has fallen off but there are plenty of rattles present. The leather seats are nice although rather worn for just 70k miles. The chrome trim has fallen off the boot. As for faults - the passenger seat had come off its mounting and the thermostat was faulty shortly after purchase. These were both fixed by the dealer, who has been brilliant by the way - highly recommended. Since then, the ABS, Traction Control, Cooling Fan and Air Conditioning have stopped working. It doesn't like starting occasionally and when it does the dials 'judder' and 'sake' up and down the range before settling at zero then coming up to the correct setting. Once the heater and fan controls on the centre console completely stopped working but they've started to work again. The windows occasionally go through a period where they don't drop to let you open and close the door, making getting in and out of the car difficult. The fuel gauge seems to have a mind of its own, jumping from quarter of a tank to reserve (when there's plenty of fuel left) before coming up to the correct value again after a period of time. When using the wipers they settle half way up the screen when turned off when not at the bottom of the screen or when using intermittent wipe. You have to switch them onto normal speed then quickly turn them off as soon as they hit the bottom of the windscreen. The exterior appearance is good - I've always liked it. It could be a little more agressive for my tastes but it's understated and appealing. Inside is functional but uninspiring. Maintenance will be expensive no doubt when I can finally look at fixing the faults - the cooling fan alone looks to be the cooling control module which is a few hundred pounds at least. Normal servicing costs what you'd expect. Fuel economy is good if you drive like a granny - 34-36mpg but dives if you drive it fairly hard. The car is fine for travelling (leather heated seats, air con (when it used to work), etc) but it just isn't fun

Pros: Heated leather seats, looks OK, good on fuel if you're gentle

Cons: Dull, unispiring drive.  Unresponsive engine, poor handling.  Unreliable, huge number of problems

A Beast! — I brought it cheap from weston super mare in march 2007, I had one before they are great cars to drive but the only done side is the turbo goes wrong quite often. But the coupe turbo has most def got to be the well worth money in its range!.

Pros: its fast!

Cons: The flippin turbo keeps going wrong!

Astra — Good car has done me well. Lots of space, and reasonbly fast. But needs some love now after lots of miles. Handles well with wider tyres. Fuel consumption is ok. After an early problem with the starter motor it has hasn't really caused me much grief at all. It's a 2.0 DTI 16V estate LS which is slightly more difficult to find parts for. Over all good car but i want an Audi RS6 Estate!!

Pros: Looks, Handling

Cons: Brakes, interior

Comfy, Well Built Daily Lugger. — 2001 2.2 astra Coupe. 150bhp. Leatehr interior. Bough as our daily runner, its proven to be comfy and reliable, cruis control is nice on long runs. Performance is nothing to write home about, but it can hold its own.

Pros: Comfy, well built

Cons: Errr..

Astra 1.7dti Ls — Bought cos my ex wife wanted an astra, has a 1.7 Isuzu diesel engine which does put it a bit better than if it had the Vauxhall diesel engine in it

Pros: Factory fitted cd player and front fog lamps, not standard on an LS model of that year

Cons: Expensive replacement parts, not much fun to drive

My Old Car — This motor represented great value for money when I purchased it in 2004. I only paid just over £4k and it had less than 40000 miles on the clock. I got nearly £2k for it when I traded it in, in 2007. I never has any issues with it's reliability, in fact I had no problems at all with it.

Pros: Reliability, value for money

Cons: Not big or fast enough

Great Car. Shame It Didn't Last Very Long With Me! — Good overall car, I had it when I wasn't ready for it, or experienced enough I think.

Pros: Very fast, very comfy, lots of space, nice seats, good gearchange.

Cons: Usual vauxhall understeer problem, heavy.
