2001 Audi TT 1.8T quattro Roadster AWDReview

Unique, Fun Roadster With Lots Of Creature-comforts And Timeless Design — The 2001 quattro roadster is a great little car. Timeless, unique styling. Head room is great for taller drivers-much better than most roadsters and even those 6'+ tall can fit comfortably (very important to me). First yr for convertible TT in US, so there are not that many good low-mileage examples left, but if you can find one can still get it for a great price. Look for the ones with the amber optic baseball interior and Bose stereo; both amazing- even by 2014 standards. Quick; especially fun in 4th/5th/6th on freeway. Suggest looking into stage 1 tune which will bring quattro up to ~250hp and smooth out power. Much more cargo room than I expected. Way less common and more unique than a boxster or bmw roadsters- still looks contemporary 14 yrs after build (moreso than later models in my opinion). People often think it is a new $40-$50k car. If you buy one, find a good audi/VW shop; they will charge prob half of the dealership. Take note of whether timing chain has been replaced and when. Replace it more often than recommended (every 50k or so, bc if they go it's bad news). Overall, I love it. Exactly what I wanted for fun and commuting on sunny days. Pros: Timeless styling. Head room is great for taller drivers. Great Bose stereo. Quick; great in on freeway. Much more cargo room than I expected. Still looks contemporary 14 yrs later. Handling in quattro is tight. Build quality is generally good (varies throughout car from amazing to meh). Cons: Stiff ride (not surprising). Can be noisy with top up on windy days. Fine if you want to crank the stereo, but not if you want to chat with passenger. Cup holders are in awkward position, very hard to reach. Mileage is good but you have to stay off the pedal to get over 25mpg. Takes 93 octane. ![]() Looking for a Used TT in your area?CarGurus has 432 nationwide TT listings starting at $3,400. |

Good Looking Gold Digger — good looking. love the convertible for hot days. breaking, accelerating, handling is decently good. Fun to drive. On the other hand ....repairs are really expensive. Spent $4000 in the last 6 months. Gas mileage sucks plus you have to use premium so its even more expensive. Big blind spots. But Im a sucker for little convertibles so I dont regret buying my TT. Primary Use: Commuting to work Pros: good looking. convertible. Fun to drive. Cons: repairs. Gas mileage. premium gas. Big blind spots. |

Collectible, Poor Man's Porsche — This car was a style tour-de-force when it hit our shores and it still is. It is a great all purpose vehicle. Although it has limited cargo capacity, it is a great car to take through winding mountain roads for a weekend. Primary Use: Sport/fun (spirited driving, track racing, off-roading, etc.) Pros: Sporty, fun to drive, economical. Cons: 2 hour front seats. |

Audi Tt 8n Roadster 2001 Apr Tuned Stage 3+ — This audi model is not to popular. You don't see to many around. That was a big plus for me. In stock form the car was economical. That also means it had no real pep. After getting bored with it like that, I added the APR turbo kit. The thing came alive. So far it runs great. I is alot of fun driving now. For me it was worth the money tuning it up. Primary Use: Sport/fun (spirited driving, track racing, off-roading, etc.) Pros: Few around, Reliable, Tuned Sleeper Cons: Parts,Labour, Insurance |

My first roadster, purchased in 2001 brand-spanking new, was incredible. If not for the very complicated mechanicals and short-lived electronic components, I would still own this lovely car. Wind er up, and feel her go as the turbo winds up. Never had so much fun!! Folks complained of anemic power, but not so!! This beast handled like nothing Ive driven prior or later with the AWD, torque vectoring with rear axle clutch pack electronically controlled by a Haldex mechanism, wide tires and fairly light weight. Using all of the power on top never caused the car to lose its poise or lose control, but the g-forces under control were very impressive. since this car Ive owned a new Nissan 350Z, and a VW Eos, and a Mazda Miata.....all roadsters, but nothing handled like the Audit TT quattro. Ive never felt compelled to drive at speeds from 80-130 mph as often as I indeed indulged in regularly with the TT, with handling at 90+ mph that felt super-planted and responsive to the slightest touch. vs2005 Nissan 350Z Touring Roadster

Would Buy
Ranked 2005 Nissan 350Z Touring Roadster worse.
"More engaging to drive, better feedback from handling responsiveness, more character overall in both dynamics and looks for certain, and just plain cooler than the Z"
Would Buy
Ranked 2009 Mazda MX-5 Miata Grand Touring better.
"Very simply, its the traditional, simple formula invented a century ago and refined mechanically but not changed experiencially, all the way to present day. A rear-wheel driven, responsive, lightweight, convertible sports car with responsive steering and acceleration, in a nicely balanced ballet of power and performance. Though far from challenging any high-performance sports car, it occupies a niche in motoring mythology that has never been challenged really.......the lightweight, responsive, hard-charging sensation of a machine that is close to feeling as an extension of the body cradled in the cockpit and controlling the power, direction, and consuming experience that only such a machine can deliver." |

Love to drive, the handling does not ever loose grip. Such a fun ride for all ages and great to learn or abuse stick. For a little car this packs a punch like no other and is lighter than a feather. If you are looking for one I would highly suggest to make sure there is no rust or internal damage. vs2002 BMW Z3 3.0i Coupe RWD
