My Wife Like The Fact That It´s Small — Good strong engine: 1,9 TDI 90hp/210 nm Lots of space(for a small car). Good mileage.

Pros: Engine, mileage

Cons: Not enough legroom if you are over 180cm

1.6 Gti With Full Leather — Owned a GTI a few years back, uprated the brakes, suspension, air filter, exhaust and chipped it. Sounded like a touring car, was rather rapid for a little car 140mph on the A69 to Hexham was fun. Had the full leather interior which was very comfy and looked very good.

Pros: quick, easily tuned, looked good, economical

Cons: someone sod stole it.  skinny steering wheel and loose feeling gearbox

Crap — This car was the worse buy ever it looked really nice but for things going wrong i was diving into my wallet every month. Also it is the wrong car to have a 1 ltr engine but when your below 25 and detest paying stupidly high insurance then its great as i think it was a group 2 cheap n cheerfull

Pros: Good road holding

Cons: Interior falls apart and electrics good at breaking too But knowing what Volks are usually like i may have had the runt of the chain

You Don't Buy This Car With Your Heart. — Good performance from the small 1.0 liter engine, probably because it spent so much of its life on the highway at high revs. In fact, this engine always had to be pretty revved up, since the gear ratios were so short. It was one of those cars where you just kept begging for a sixth gear or taller gearing. Handling wasn't bad but there was some lack of feel, particularly from the steering and the brakes. The latter sometimes didn't seem up to the job and required quite a vigorous push, due to the amount of pedal travel needed before anything happened. The gearbox on the other hand was quite good, though in its later years it was becoming a bit notchy and 1st gear was sometimes hard to select. Everything was pretty solid and well assembled but the the interior materials were too hard and some parts - door panels, gearbox, steering wheel - started to shed some skin after a while, which I think is unacceptable considering how much it cost when new. One of the things that annoyed me the most about this car was its poor ergonomics, such as: . The electric windows controls were placed so far back on the door handles that you had to use the opposite hand to the door to operate them, particularly the driver! . The air recirculation button could only be used if the air direction dial was in certain positions. . Because the back window defroster button was an analog toggle button, that meant it was extremely easy to forget turning it off. Since it wouldn't turn itself off even when you started the car, that meant you could easily be using the defroster when you had no need for it. Its looks are a bit bland - not bad looking but definitely not striking. As far as maintenance goes, you just have to avoid VW dealers - it's an absolute rip-off. Original parts themselves were quite expensive.

Primary Use: Commuting to work

Pros: Reasonable performance and reliable.

Cons: Price as new. Poor materials used in the interior. Low gear ratios and lack of any feeling from the brakes.
