Engine improvements in the prior year had boosted the SC 400's performance, but some critics argued that the overall look of the coupe was too antiquated compared to emerging competition. The SC's appearance had changed little since its introduction in 1992. Daytime running lights and a perforated leather trim were new for 1999, and 6-six CD changer was added as standard equipment.
Variable Valve Timing+intelligence technology furthered the already powerful 4.0 liter V-8 engine. It now generated 290 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque, sending the SC from 0 to 60 in about six seconds and through the quarter mile in 14.7 seconds. The 3800 pound coupe's powerful brakes brought it from 60 mph to a stop in just 128 feet. VVT also lowered the SC's emissions and improved fuel economy, now rated at 18/25 mpg.
The 5-speed manual transmission had proven to be a very positive addition to the powerful SC 400, although the manual is harder to find. Regardless of the debate over what the SC's road manners, it is a car marked by reliability and luxury. Owners report only minimal hiccups, and those who have kept a regular maintenance schedule have found this Lexus coupe to be virtually trouble-free beyond 100,000 miles.
