1998 Peugeot 206 Review

Great Compact Car — This was my 1998 Peaugeot 206 (not actual picture) with the 1.6 8v petrol engine. It produced 90 bhp for a weight of nearly 1200Kg. It was my first car that actually belonged to me, I kept it for a year and a half. It had the A/C, electric windows, rain detector and other cool stuff. I gave it some alloy wheels anda spoiler at the time. It was a 4 door so everyone onboard had legroom. The stereo was quite nice with 8 speakers all around and a subwoofer in the boot.

Pros: drives well, cheap to run, confortable for a car this small, reliable

Cons: a bit sluggish, slippery in high speed corners (not what it's meant to do anyway...)

1998 Peugeot 206 Review

Ideal 1st Car — I had this car for about 3 years and the only thing that went wrong was the battery died once because it was 5 years old at the time. I know there are stories of Peugeots being unreliable but all i can say is from my experience, i didnt have any problems. I like the styling as its simple but sexy at the same time and the interior quality isn't bad even at the entry level models. I admit, its not Aston Martin interior, but its doesnt look or feel like the inside of a Happy Meal box. The 3 door is reasonanly practical and spacious for adults in the back and there is a good boot capacity, with folding rear seats. On the 1.1 litre, the performance is ok. 0-60 in around 13 seconds, top speed of 98 i think, however, you will find it struggles when you try and go over 70mph, espically if your on a upward sloping road. At speed the steering will feel light and less responsive but not dangeriously so. Handling is very good, its very nippy and responsive and easy to get around town, probably not ideal for long haul trips with a heavy load and passangers. If you drive her economically, you can get 400 miles from 1 tank (i cant remember the mpg figure) normal driving will return around 250-300 miles from 1 tank. In summary, ideal for a 1st time driver and as a local run around and cheap to run and insure, but not great for high speed and long trips with heavy load/passangers.

Pros: Cheap to buy and run, nippy/responsive, fun to drive, cult status, handy for day to day life

Cons: lack of power, common, not ideal for long trips at speed, hard to get over 70 unless on a downwards sloping road, lower gears are notchy, brakes are a little soft even if effective.
