Mercedes-Benz introduced the SLK230 in the 1998 model year to compete with the Porsche Boxster and BMW Z3. The car was differentiated from its competitors with a folding hard top, but serious drivers complained the feature added weight and slowed the roadster down.
Still, the car on Car and Driver's Ten Best list for 1997. The SLK230 featured a supercharged, 2.3 liter engine that produced 185 horses.
Other complaints included maintenance problems as the vehicle aged. And many found it cramped with seats that lacked sufficient padding.
