By the 1998 model year Mercedes-Benz had plans for a major update to is S-Class in 2000, so there were relatively few changes to the 1998 S420. The car continued to be powered by a 4.2 liter V8 engine that produced 275 horsepower and continued to ride on a 123.6 inch wheelbase.
Standard in 1998 was the "Brake Assist" system, which automatically applied full braking force in panic stops, responding to rapid brake-pedal movement, as was the "BabySmart."
User reviews seemed to focus in on maintenance problems, with one cautioning it should only be purchased with an extended warranty and another saying she and her husband had dumped $6,000 in repairs into the vehicle.

In 1998 Mercedes-Benz re-badged the S500 coupes as CL500 to eliminate confusion with the benchmark sedan of the company's premier vehicle line-up. Otherwise, there were few changes from the previous model year for the ever-popular S500.
A 5.0 liter V8 engine powered the S500 to an astonishing 315 horsepower. Safety features included ABS, front and side airbags, Brake Assist, BabySmart child seat detection and ASR traction control.
"It feels like your driving a ship because its so smooth on the road," wrote one owner. Others loved the cars handling and acceleration, and praise for its comfort and passenger space was near unanimous.

In 1998 Mercedes re-branded coupe versions of its famous S600 as CL600, eliminating confusion among buyers and enthusiasts. Outside of that, there were few changes to the S600 in the 1998 with a major overhaul of the vehicle planned for the 2000 model year.
The S600 remained the premier car in Mercedes' premier lineup. BrakeAssist and BabySmart were added as standard safety features, and the vehicle retained its 6.0-liter V12 engine, 389 horsepower, 420 foot-pounds of torque engine.
There were minor complaints about the cars gas mileage, but on the whole drivers had positive feedback for the 1998 S600. "This is the finest car I have ever driven," claimed one owner.
