In 1998, the acclaimed Lexus 5-speed manual transmission became available in the SC 400. The new transmission was also paired with a far more powerful V-8.
Toyota TRD's Variable Valve Timing technology was new to the SC in 1998. This system was a first for a production V-8. Its benefits included lower emissions, improved fuel economy, and of course more power due to variable camshaft timing. The engine was still a 4.0 liter V-8, but now with 290 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque. The 0 to 60 mph time dropped to 6.1 seconds.
Many critics had questioned the true sporting nature of the SC. They considered the SC more of a luxury coupe than a real sports car like its competition. However, 1998 brought a step in the right direction: the already luxurious and well appointed coupe was now equipped with nearly 300 horsepower and a smooth shifting manual transmission. The 3840 pound curb weight and substantial body roll were still issues, but the 1998 upgrades exemplified the ongoing effort to find the ideal blend of sport and luxury.
