Completely Satisfied - One Of My Best Vehicle Purchases Ever. —

We absolutely love our Jeep. We will probably buy a second one to replace our Ford Taurus Wagon as our other winter vehicle. Our summer cars are both Sports Cars (a Mazda Miata and a Datsun 240-Z) so we're into good handling - and despite being an SUV, the Jeep Cherokee is a VERY good handling vehicle - we have Rancho Shocks on it and the suspension is nice and tight - it takes curves great. Also has very spirited acceleration. It is a blast to drive in snowy weather - nothing stops it (we have Bridgestone Blizzaks on the original 15" wheels for winter and a set of Goodyear Fortera TripleTreds on 16" Wheels for the rest of the year. Gas Mileage is a bit low compared to more modern SUVs (we average around 14-15 mpg). Now that it's getting older, minor wiring issues are starting to crop up (Drivers Door Speaker no longer works, 3rd Brakelight only lights if tailgate is open, Electric Window switches on passenger doors stopped working even when master switch is in "On" position, electric door locks only function when door is in certain positions). Fortunately, the Driver's Master set of switches for the windows still works - so I have all the control... :-) The Engines and Drivelines in these Jeeps go on forever - but as they age, smaller issues happen with wiring, alternator, etc. But bear in mind, I've now got nearly 200,000 miles on it and it is 16 years old. I remember a time when if one got 100,000 miles and 6 or 7 years of good service out of a car (or Jeep) one was doing good. Over all I'm completely satisfied - one of my best vehicle purchases ever.

Pros: Great Handling on dry, wet or snowy roads (we have the top-of-the-line 2WD, AWD, 4Hi, 4Lo Transfer Case - HIGHLY recommended)
Great off road capability.
Great acceleration.

Cons: Gas Mileage a bit low (average around 15 mpg).
Minor wiring issues starting to crop up.
Bear in mind, I've now got nearly 200,000 miles on it and it is 16 years old.

Awsome — i love it the motor is powerful and good on gas but now that it has 223000 mile its fallin apart. goes awsome in the snow and the mud and is a blast to drive on a sunny warm day

Primary Use: Sport/fun (spirited driving, track racing, off-roading, etc.)

Pros: the ablity to go through snow and mud with ease

Cons: when it breaks it breaks

1998 Jeep Cherokee Classic 4-Door RWD Review

Nice car but the biggest issue I have seen with this vehicle is the gas mileage. Came with a straight inline 6 cylinder gas engine. Mileage per mile was poor to say the least. Interior was nice, acceptable. Vehicle had a nice height just for casual off road.

Cargo Capacity Ranked 1998 GMC Jimmy 4 Dr SL SUV better.
"Both the Jimmy and the Jeep Cherokee have comparable storage capacity. I believe the Jimmy ease of converting the rear cargo area was easier than that of the Jeep."
Value Ranked 1998 GMC Jimmy 4 Dr SL SUV better.
"By in large believe that most Jeeps were taken off road whether casual or serious off rode. So many unfortunately we drive off rode and sustained frame damage, damaged body panels. Jimmy I believe was not used as much for off road without serious suspension modification, IE solid axel swap, tires etc."

The only thing I dont like about the 2020 jeep Cherokee is the power. It lacks the take off power I prefer. But other than that its a beautiful vehicle rides smoothly and is comfortable. Read More
