The SL320 was packed with new safety features in the 1997 model year, including heat-resisting tinted glass running the full length of the an optional top and a front-seat occupant-detection sensor that deactivated the right-side airbag when it determined that the passenger seat held less than 26 pounds.
But the marquee improvement for the 3.2 liter, 6-cylinder vehicle was the new top. The "panorama" hardtop became was offered as an alternative to the standard lift-off aluminum roof.
"I can't say enough good things about this car," wrote one owner. "This is such a fun car to drive," wrote another.

Mercedes-Benz offered a panorama hardtop in the SL600 for the first time in the 1997 model year, reducing some earlier complaints about visibility while driving with the car's top up. A standard rain sensor was the only other added feature from the previous model year.
The SL600's power plant was a 6.0-liter, V12 engine that pumped out 389 horses. The '97 SL500 runs from zero to 60 in just 5.7 seconds.
Owners called it a "fast and subtle commuter/touring machine" and noted greatly improved handling.
