97 E420 Sport — The 4.2L engine is incredible, and performance only hampered by the weight of the vehicle. Surprisingly easy on tires. Great braking power. Fuel economy is around 18-20mpg mixed driving. The 5-speed automatic is very versatile and driver- adaptive. You don't get those constant upshifts-downshifts like on the earlier E320 (and ML320) models. Very roomy and comfortable. Still gets compliments!

Primary Use: Commuting to work

Pros: Power, braking, comfort, space, features, safety, appearance

Cons: Would benefit from sportier suspension and less weight

Really A Work Of Art — this car is different from all the other e-class because it has been specified and i bought it and issued it straight from the factory whereas i didn't even go to the dealership to get it, all interior electronics are all custom fitted and seats are are really comfortable

Primary Use: Family transportation

Pros: comfortable and quiet engine

Cons: gear-box failiure can occur easily after a period of 12 years

Build To Last, Easy To Burn! — Solid build quality and presence that can't be denied. Performance was outstanding for I-6 engine. Electrical issues spoiled the day. Ownership cost though was comparable to mid size sedans. Overall, its nice to have it once in a while.

Primary Use: Commuting to work

Pros: Presence & Grace

Cons: Relaibility

Fun Family Car. — I love this car!! My lead foot loves the quick and reliable acceleration from a dead stop or to pass from a nice cruising speed. Rides smoothly and quietly. The car is sturdy and big enough for my family, yet fun enough for an enthusiast. MPG is good for 8 cylinders. FUN FUN FUN.

Pros: Lots of power.

Cons: Repairs can be expensive.

Nice Built Car — This one looks really old today... But comfort is on top. Buy E55 AMG if you want great perfomance.

Pros: Comfort

Cons: Looks so old and problems with rust

I purchased $2,500 my first MB 97 e420 after my awesome BMW 540i transmission failed. Really like my e420 for the relialabitly. v8 power, great gas mileage. no complants here. only minor service breaks, oil change. 208,000 miles.
