The Lexus SC 300 received a mild facelift for 1997, resulting in a more aggressive appearance. A trip computer was also added. Unfortunately, 1997 was the last production year for the manual transmission SC 300s. The 5-speed was moved to the SC 400 for 1998.
The SC's engine was a 3.0 liter inline six, which made 225 horsepower and 210 lb-ft of torque. The SC 300 had a 0-60 time of just over seven seconds, and a reasonable sports car fuel economy of 18/23 mpg. While the SC 300's ride was a bit of a departure from what one might expect from a Lexus, some felt that it did not go far enough. The suspension was tuned a bit stiffer for a better feel of the road, but still retained considerable softness. While this suspension was ideal for most drivers, some felt that it hindered the sporting appeal of the car.
Buyers of the original SC had come back for a new coupe, and many were pleased that little had changed. Others felt that change was long overdue, considering the steady emergence of new competition. The SC was still powered by the same engine, and although styling had been freshened, the coupe retained much of its original appearance. It was advised that the SC should be experienced with a manual transmission, and 1997 was the last chance for 300 buyers.
