There are not many changes to the 1997 Grand Caravan STD base model from the previous year. It still comes standard with the 2.4-liter, 150-hp I4 engine, with an option for either the 3.0 V6 or 3.3, 158-hp V6. A 3-speed auto tran, tinted glass, intermittent wipers, 14-inch wheels and power steering and brakes, are some of the standard features. Options such as ABS, a tachometer, cruise control, tilt steering wheel, and power windows and locks cost more, but add luxury to this people-mover.
It scores high with owners on its versatility, functional interior, cargo space, and sturdy design. But many owners report repair headaches, particularly with the transmission, electrical system, and wipers that suddenly start for no reason.

The 1997 Grand Caravan SE shares the same standard engine as the base model, a 2.4-liter, 150-hp I4, with optional 3.0 and 3.3, 158-hp V6. It also offers more standard features than the base model, including ABS, cruise control, a tachometer, tilt steering, and power heated mirrors. It is a good middle ground between affordability and luxury.
Options include a towing package, leather steering wheel trim, captain's chairs, keyless entry, and lighted entry. As with all Grand Caravans, the roominess and cargo space can't be beat, and the car-like handling makes driving easier than it looks. A driver's side sliding door (optional) is a godsend to many. And, as with all Grand Caravans, the biggest drawback is the repair record.

The return of AWD is the biggest change for the 1997 Grand Caravan, after an inexplicable one-year hiatus. The Grand Caravan SE AWD offers the same base creature comforts as its front-wheel drive counterpart, except for a much more powerful engine, the 3.8-liter, 166-hp V6 engine that comes standard in all Grand Caravan AWD vehicles. Power brakes and steering, power heated mirrors, cruise control, tilt steering, and 15-inch wheels, and ABS brakes are all standard.
Options include fog lights, dual sliding doors, leather trim, keyless and lighted entry, captain's chairs, and a roof rack. A special Sport Package offered with the SE added a sports-tuned suspension and body-colored moldings. Surprisingly, power windows and locks and air conditioning are options and not standard on the SE AWD.

For a minivan with added luxury and engine power, the 1997 Grand Caravan LE has a lot to offer in terms of interior features. Building upon the SE, the LE comes standard with a 3.3-liter, 158-hp V6 engine and optional 3.8-liter, 180-hp V6, paired with a four-speed automatic transmission. Getting about 18/23 mpg, it won't win any fuel economy awards, but it's got adequate pep for a seven-passenger carrier.
Standard features that are an upgrade from the SE include air conditioning, power windows and locks, the convenient driver's side second sliding door, keyless entry, overhead console, and lighted entry. Front and rear climate control, leather seats, and traction control are available as options. Owners love the luxurious ride, smooth handling, convenient dual sliding doors, and lots of storage space. Problems seem to occur with the transmission, air conditioning, and phantom wipers.

The minivan innovator, the 1997 Dodge Grand Caravan ES is the top of the line minivan going for a bit more sportier package than the other trims. It shares the same 3.3-liter, 158-hp V6 engine and 4-speed auto tran with the LE, as well as such standard features as keyless and lighted entry, overhead console, dual front airbags, the much-loved dual sliding doors, cruise control, trip computer, ABS, and tilt steering. ES-only features add a sporty look and include 16-inch alloy wheels and fog lights.
You can upgrade the 1997 Grand Caravan ES to a 3.8-liter, 166-hp V6 engine and add a camper/towing package, security system, traction control, and leather seats. In the ES, you can also add a leather trimmed steering wheel. Affordability, comfort, and storage capacity are the highlights that drivers point out in their Grand Caravan ES. It fits a wide variety of cargo and the dual sliding doors provide easy exit and entry. Poor reliability, faulty transmission and brakes, and other mechanical problems plague the Caravan.

All-wheel drive makes a comeback this year in the 1997 Grand Caravan LE AWD, and many owners are glad for the extra sturdiness, confidence, and stability on and off the road. The Grand Caravan LE AWD features the 3.8-liter, 166-hp V6 engine and 4-speed auto tran, which turns the Grand Caravan into a speedy little people mover. A self-leveling suspension system also distinguishes it from the LE front-wheel drive Grand Caravan.
Other standard features are similar to the regular LE, including dual sliding doors, keyless entry, overhead console, power windows and locks, air conditioning, a trip computer, lighted entry, and cruise control. Options such as traction control, leather seats, front and back climate control and a towing package prepare the LE AWD for any situation. Drivers like the handling of the Grand Caravan LE AWD, but don't like its reliability.

The 1997 Grand Caravan ES AWD is the premier model of the popular minivan, which packs a decent amount of power, but packs even more storage and people inside its versatile interior. A 3.8-liter, 166-hp V6 engine moves this minivan and makes it a powerful hauler. Dual sliding doors add convenience to loading people and cargo. A self-leveling suspension comes with all AWD Grand Caravans.
Standard ES features include fog lights, 16-inch wheels, dual front airbags, cruise control, trip computer, keyless and lighted entry, overhead console, and ABS brakes. Add extras, such as leather seats and trim, power driver's seat, a CD changer, front and rear air conditioning, and traction control to turn the Grand Caravan ES AWD into a ready-for-anything family car. Great power, loads of room, innovative sliding doors, and sturdy AWD are all plusses in the eyes of Grand Caravan owners. As always, the biggest negative is the minivan's reliability.
