The the LX trim continues to serve as the entry point of Chrysler's mid-size Cirrus sedan. The LX would be temporarily discontinued after this year, leaving the more luxurious LXi as the only Cirrus model. The LX was now available with the Gold Package of options, including an in-dash CD changer and a trip computer.
The LX had two engine options. The base version was a 2.4 liter DOHC 4-cylinder engine which made 150 horsepower. The upgrade was 2.5 liter V-6, producing 164 horsepower and 163 pound-feet of torque. Both engines were teamed with a four-speed automatic transmission. While the Cirrus offered a responsive sport-tuned suspension, its acceleration off the line was a bit slow (9.4 seconds).
The Cirrus series was steadily hampered by build quality and reliability problems. Some drivers went as far as claiming that their Cirrus experience has turned them away from Chrysler forever. Many problems were minor hiccups and inconveniences, but other led to costly service stops. Owners included accounts of brake hose leaks, transmission problems, excessive underbody corrosion, and leaky engine valve cases in their reviews.

After this year, the Cirrus LXi would temporarily become the only version of the mid-size sedan. In 1997 chrome wheels became standard, and a CD changer and trip computer were added as options. The Cirrus continued as one of Chrysler's best besting models, and the LXi offered some additional luxuries.
The Cirrus aimed to draw attention away from the ever expanding crowd of Japanese import sedans. In many cases, the Cirrus offered a lower MSRP, but performance and luxury were commensurate with price. The LXi was equipped with an abundance of standard features, including ABS, cruise control, keyless entry, and A/C. The more upscale LXi also offered leather trim and other luxury add-ons.
However, constant build quality and reliability issues surrounded the Cirrus throughout its six years of production. Aside from common problems like electric motor failure and leaky brake hoses, quality issues with the transmission also impeded performance. Although the relatively light and very aerodynamic LXi was powered by a 168 horsepower V-6, it accelerated from 0 to 60 in almost ten seconds. While the power supply seemed more than adequate, the hesitant 4-speed automatic transmission failed to deliver it in the lower speed range.
