Fun Fun Fun Fun!!!! Yeehaw — I've owned my SS for about 6 years now. I bought it with 8500 mi on it and now has 44,000. I recently did ALOT of high performance mods to my car. I researched for about 6 months before I started my mods. I like everything about this car overall and what I didn't like I just made better. The stock performance for a 4,200 lb car was great. There were some issues with the build that was questionable however there are fixes for alot of them.(ie. odometer, window tilting, water in MAF) I didn't buy this car to gripe that it can drink some fuel. I bought it to have fun! Really if you stop to think about it, after first buying my car I did 3 mods - Hypertech download, air intake, exhaust. I was getting around 23 miles on the hwy. Now for a 4,200lb high performance LT1 - Not to bad! I have alot of hands on with my car not to mention my younger brother and mother had one also. Between theirs and mine I can say I'm pretty knowledgeable with 96 Impala SS.

Pros: There are to many positives for me to list here. My SS is just an overall fun car to drive.

Cons: To me there are no negatives. If anyone has any questions on their negs and how to fix, pls ask

Modern Muscle — If you want a traditional muscle car (no turns here) then the impala is on of the best. Great stock platform to work with and the small block can be swapped with anything more modern if you should like.

Pros: Classic looks, loads of parts.

Cons: Heavy, expensive to maintain.

Like The Car; Electronics Suck! — Bought car new May 1996. Runs great, looks great. We really have enjoyed the car however, we have had considerable touble with the electronics. First the ditributor and coils then fuel level sending unit and now (last couple of years) odometer displays intermitently.

Owner for 11 years, 0 months

Miles Driven per Year:10,000

Pros: Good looks, runa great

Cons: Electronics suck

Big Bang For The Buck — Purchased this car new in 1996 use it for 40,000 well enjoyed miles :) plenty of road trips with the family all around great car. Now enjoys it's semi retirement sitting on jackstands in the garage. Hope to take it out soon now that the snow has melted :)

Primary Use: Sport/fun (spirited driving, track racing, off-roading, etc.)

Pros: Performs when it needs to even with a trunk full luggage

Cons: Front seats can use a little more stuffing a lot of road noise but other than that great car.

4 Door Vette. — This Impala SS has been my highway attack vehicle. Returns 25mpg on regular and with enough room to stretch out. The sofa front lounge area should have been designed for transportation. At speed or in the corners she performs. The faster you run her the lower to the ground she gets, no wonder cops loved the C-9-1 Impalas.

Primary Use: Sport/fun (spirited driving, track racing, off-roading, etc.)

Pros: Quiet giant

Cons: The only thing is the front seats need much bolstering.

Better pure driver than the Marauder for two reasons: Lots of low-end torque and better brakes. 96 model has floor shift, which is desirable for many, but the price for those looking for a driver 96 is zero cupholders, none, anywhere. For those seeking a driver rather than a collectable, go with the column shift 1994-1995 models. Very close call compared with the Marauder. Age of these vehicles can cause insurance hurdles, one reason Im going with a Marauder.

Power Ranked 2004 Mercury Marauder 4 Dr STD Sedan worse.
"Low end torque in the Impala fits better with the size and weight of the car. Chevy throttle is more linear, the Merc throttle is abnormally weighted toward the first bit of travel (the car mags call this throttle tip-in.)"
Handling Ranked 2004 Mercury Marauder 4 Dr STD Sedan worse.
"Handling is very close but the Impala has significantly better brakes. "
Looks/Style Ranked 2004 Mercury Marauder 4 Dr STD Sedan better.
"The bathtub styling of the Impala comes in second to the plain, but purposeful styling of the Merc. There is no advantage here that would change a Chevy Man into a Ford Man, but Ford is the winner here."
Front Seats Ranked 2004 Mercury Marauder 4 Dr STD Sedan better.
"Close call, perceived slightly better room, adjustability, and position in the Merc."
Back Seats Ranked 2004 Mercury Marauder 4 Dr STD Sedan better.
"Close to Even but had to make a choice. Impala windows didnt roll all the way down and are breakage-prone. Think Marauder back seat passengers would have a better experience."
Cargo Capacity Ranked 2004 Mercury Marauder 4 Dr STD Sedan better.
"Made this call due to the deeper trunk in the Marauder. Probably would have called this one Even but I had to choose one way or the other."
Family Car Ranked 2004 Mercury Marauder 4 Dr STD Sedan better.
"The Marauder has more convenience features, such as friendlier gages, more driver position adjustability, and some cupholders. Other than that they are very close. Why are cupholders so important? Because no one wants to spill their stuff all over the interior of a special interest car, and no one wants to have to modify the originality of the car to create the cupholders. "
Value Ranked 2004 Mercury Marauder 4 Dr STD Sedan better.
"Prices on the Marauder are running about even with the Impalas, with the Impala older and harder to insure - not impossible, but more difficult. Really, this boils down to condition, mileage, originality, and option levels. I would have gladly bought either one but found the best value locally with a Marauder with desirable options and colors."
Would Buy Ranked 2004 Mercury Marauder 4 Dr STD Sedan better.
"Slightly better car all around but wow, a close competition. See comments on Value for details. If I had kept looking, since I was trying for a daily driver, I would have shifted toward a 1995 model Impala so that I would not have to modify the interior. Digital gages on the 95 would have been a reluctant compromise to live with."

well my overall impression of this car is good. when they first came out i had to have one. the looks and style was very cool and they have aged well. when i did purchase one i was let down by the performance. the car is not fast in stock form, floats down the road and doesnt handle well. sure you an throw alot of money at it to make gobs of power and have tight suspension but im all for enjoying a car the way it rolled off the assembly line. if your looking for corvette performance look elsewhere. if your looking for a large 4 door family sedan with lots of storage space and style that doesnt cost a whole lot to maintain this is the car.
