Sandwiched between two years of significant changes, the 1993 Lexus ES 300 added only two new features: a fuel cap tether and locking seatbelt retractors. Since the introduction in 1989, ES styling had seen little change, and the addition of a larger engine for the previous model year was the most significant piece of news in the sedan's short history. The entry level ES 300 was now slated below several new models, including the SC series sports coupes and the GS 300 performance sedan. The ES 300 had been intended as a sport sedan, but inadequate power left it in the dust of European competitors.
Still, suspension and handling were adjusted for a stiffer road-sensitive feel. The front wheel drive ES was powered by an electronically fuel injected 24-valve DOHC V-6. The more powerful 3.0 liter power plant made 185 horsepower, which was a 30 horse improvement over its predecessor. Another engine upgrade would boost the 1994 model's performance. Drivers of this 5-speed manual transmission ES reported slightly better fuel efficiency. The ES 300 was rated at 19/25 mpg, but 5-speed drivers reported mixed driving averages around 25 mpg.
Lexus continued to lengthen the lists of standard features and options. Add-ons like the moonroof, heated seats, and Nakamichi sound system could now be found in more ESs. Long time ES owners suggest that the Lexus dealership should be avoided for service needs. The ES 300 has many interchangeable parts with with its Toyota Camry cousin, and repair costs can often be minimized.
