My 1992 Subaru Svx —

Ever since I first saw a SVX new in 1992 I wanted one although the 30k price tag was a shocker! Performance through the midrange is pretty decent even with the heavy weight {3600lbs} But what I would give for a twin turbo setup with an STi 6 speed tranny conversion in this car. The handling when compared to the nice ride quality is a nice surprise. The car feels a lot like a honda prelude We used to own, even though the Honda had upgraded springs and sway bars the SVX out performs it in the performance and handling hands down. On the autox course the body roll is there to some degree but the car is very neutral feeling with no tendancy to push {likely from the AWD} when pushed to the limits it is still very easy to regain control with throttle input. The brakes are the weak point, even though mine has been upgraded to slotted disks on all 4 wheels as the stockers tend to warp and overheat there is still some fade they are undersized for the weight of the car, aftermarket pads would most likely help in this department. The build quality is very good, after 17 years the car has 170,000 miles on it and items that would have been long broken on most cars still work perfect. I am suffering from a minor issue with the fuel guage and/or sending unit as it rarely reads above 1/4 tank but the low fuel light comes on so I am leaning toward the guage. The EGR trips a light from time to time but these are minor for a car of this age and milage. The styling is still very edgy some hate it some love it. The cars had a very low production number and it still turns heads, some people roll down the window or follow me into a parking lot to comment on it or ask what it is. I have owned several 60's and 70's muscle cars, an STi, a JCW Mini Cooper and all have their on personality and fun factor. When compared to the all out performance of the STi and the crazy fun of the Mini, the SVX gives up a big chunk of that performance and in trade you get a very comfortable cruising car that can also take on some nice twisting roads well enough to get the blood pumping and put a smile on your face without losing a kidney from a harsh ride.

Primary Use: Commuting to work

Pros: Looks, quality, unique styling, good handling

Cons: Lower performance, poor brakes

A Cer Designed With No Limits. — This was Subaru's top of the line flagship from the 90's Even thou it only came in automatic nowadays it's very easy to make the manual transmission conversion. That is one of the best improvements for the SVX. It drives very firm, feels solid like a german car, and has an exhaust tone in between a Porsche Carrera and an Impreza STI.

Primary Use: Sport/fun (spirited driving, track racing, off-roading, etc.)

Pros: The unique design, nothing in the road looks like an SVX, no other coupe has AWD with a boxer 6 in the front.

Cons: Parts are not easy to find, but not impossible.

Svx Not Too Bad — Overall i love this car! THE GOOD: the exterior is amazing always catches the eye, acceleration is pretty good beats most of the rice rockets , handling is not that bad, pretty responsive. Fun to drive especially in the snow, you can drift really good with it in a big open parking lot. My model has the option from either being on AWD to FWD. Which i like a lot, since it wont stress the transmission as much compared to if it was on awd all the time. THE BAD: The gas mileage is terrible, and on top of that it runs on premium which is costly. the rear wheel bearings are noisy and needs new ones. The transmission failed on me already so i had to replace it. Apparently it needs an additional cooling system which i still need to install. ALso pretty heavy, which slows the car down alot. H6 is a great motor except when you change the spark plugs, it'll take u all day. other than that its pretty good!

Pros: AWD /FWD option, hp, comfortable ride, appearance(eye catcher)

Cons: rear bearings, gas mileage, runs only on premium, no 5spd option

1992 Subaru Svx - It's A Luxury Touring Car, Not A Sports Car. — For a 1992 it's a great mix of comfort, handling, and cost. After a 12 hour drive you don't feel the need to stretch. Off-ramps are an absolute joy. It actually gets better mileage than my parents 2005 Forester, which weighs 300 lbs less, has a small engine, and is 14 years newer. And, like any Subaru, it lets you laugh at the worst winter can throw at you. I have yet to find snow deep enough to stop this car. On the downside, parts can be pricey (most are dealer only). The automatic transmission can make things a bit boring at times (but it is possible to convert it to manual), and the car is damn heavy (3600+ lbs), which murders the potential acceleration from a strong engine.

Pros: Comfort, all weather invincibility

Cons: Weight

Slushvx — The only real drawbacks are the MAF limitations and that it only comes in AutoMagic.... I fixed both of those issues... LOVE it! This is not a car will not be enjoyed by people who don't know their way around a garage.

Pros: Window-in-Window, power on tap, all custom parts (useless to car theifs)

Cons: Cool people like to "key it" :(

A Car Ahead Of Its Time Hampered By Price And A Few Major Issues. — This car ws very advanced for its time. It has projector headlights, speed sensing whiperblades, summer and winter mode for the wipers a swell (so they dont get frozen to the window), true 4 wheel drive, a great stereo, as well as ample storage, very unique windows, and a host of other stock options.

Pros: handeling, spped, and looks

Cons: real wheer bearings, transmission, and what ever the other major issue is

Svx- One Wild Ride — This car is all sport, by far the fastest car I have ever owned an this was my frst! One of the most powerful engines Subaru ever put out, and even with it being very heavy it still goes. Only downside is they were all made in automatics but that doesnt stop it from hitting the 150 mph mark.

Pros: V6-230 Horse Suby Engine

Cons: Automatic

Odd Windows, Leather, 230 Hp, Awd...what More Do You Need? — The odd windows are only a part of it. It is hands down the smoothest, best driving, car I have ever driven. I drove it 21 hours in one weekend and didn't even have to stretch afterwards, all while averaging 32 MPG. Easy 220+ KPH when called for, but a bit of a snail when launching because of the weight. 192,000 KM on mine and going strong as ever. Distinctive styling that sets it apart from the rest and All Wheel Drive to leave them all behind in the snow!

Pros: Comfort, driveability, styling

Cons: weight, age

Luxury Sports Car Way Ahead Of Its Time In 1992 —

I fell in love with this car when I first saw it, and bought one a year later. Such an amazing vehicle was way ahad of its time when it was introduced in 1992. Subaru, successful and well known for its reliable AWD econoboxes, decided to make a play in the luxury sport car segment. So they built a new 3300cc, 6 cylinder, horizontally opposed power plant, added a computer controlled automatic transmission that would automatically adjust the shifting points based on the way you depress the gas pedal. If you stomped on the pedal, a sensor triggers the "Power mode" which makes the tranny shift later in each gear. Very cool! Then they put every fancy gizmo they could cram in with leather interior and suede dashboard and trim. Crystal clear multi-speaker sound system and even heated seats. The entire chassis was dipped in zinc coating for complete rust protection before assembly, so they would last many years without corrosion. Unfortunately, people were not warm to the idea of paying a sports car price for a Subaru, so poor marketing kept sales down and Subaru abandoned the experiment in 1997 and concentrated on their bread and butter product. Like so much artwork, it is not really appreciated until it is gone. There are still a few around 15 years later.

Pros: Flat H6 engine, AWD
computer controlled, multi-profile automatic transmission.
wide stance and low center of gravity,
Leather and suede interior, telescopic steering column,
fully loaded electronics and sound system.
Sleek profile and odd window style turns many heads.

Cons: Rear wheel bearings wear too easily,
transmission overheats under hard driving (OK after adding an extra cooler)
