1991 Lexus ES 250 Overview

The Lexus ES 250 remained unchanged for the 1991 model year, but the entry-level luxury sedan would undergo several revisions in the following year. The first ES was nearly a twin of Toyota's Camry, but Lexus would soon begin a steady effort to distance the two. With just a slightly higher sticker price than its Toyota counterpart, the 1991 ES 250 provided shoppers with a more affordable alternative to the only other Lexus, the LS 400.
This ES was available with either a smooth five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic transmission. The engine was an electronically fuel-injected 24-valve V-6, borrowed from Toyota. The 156 horses achieved a respectable 0-60 mph time of just over nine seconds, aided in part the light weight of the ES body. Handling and suspension were reconfigured to create a sports sedan feel, but the combination of firm ride and light weight led some drivers to feel that the wrong bump might launch them entirely from the road's surface.
This initial offering from the emerging Japanese luxury automaker was intended to provide a viable alternative to the European luxury sedan market. While build quality and reliability are unquestionable, the first ES failed to provide the same driving excitement or dynamic looks of European autos. However, Lexus was born from Toyota, and that says a lot of the car's durability. Even the first generation ES can be spotted frequently on the roads today, and some have even crossed the elusive 300, 000 mile mark.
