1989 Ford Mustang GT Hatchback RWDReview

All Show, Not Much Go — As polished as this 100% stock 5.0L Mustang GT was, I was a little disappointed with it's performance. This particular car was built from factory to be a cruiser with highway gears and not the typical pep that 5.0L Mustangs are known for. It was quicker than your average car, but had trouble even spinning the tires. For a 5.0L Mustang, it was all show and no go. Braking and handling was typical of what you'd expect from a domestic car...not exceptionally great, not terribly bad. The build quality of the car was decent with the exception of some of the interior panels which didn't fit and line up like they were supposed to. This particular Mustang was very well looked after before I owned it and I continued to baby it, as does its current owner so everything on it was like new. The only on going issue I had with it was the idle kept searching despite replacing numerous sensors and checking for vacuum leaks. Nothing I did could pin point the problem and as far as I know the current owner still hasn't been able to fix it either. Appearance-wise, this car was damn sexy! I loved seeing people turn their heads as they saw this car go down the road...even if it was just because it was so shiny and bright! I kept it looking like a million bucks and even added a few tasteful details to the exterior to enhance its appearance. Inside the car was super clean and still even smelled like a new car. It had a light grey cloth interior that was easy on the eyes. Fuel economy was surprisingly good for a V8, but that's because the rear end was geared for highway. Didn't really have too many maintenance issues with it other than replacing the water pump and of course the surging idle problem. I took it upon myself to upgrade the exhaust system to a Dynamax Ultra Flow setup with an X pipe effectively removing two of the four catalytic converters. I had the new 2 and a half inch exhaust pipes ceramic coated to a polished chrome-like finish. Still, the car didn't have the sound I was looking for despite the nearly straight through mufflers. This was the second car I ever owned. However, it was the first really nice car I owned. I had my share of fun in it for the five years I owned it, but I have to admit that I rarely drove it because it was so mint I feared it would get scratched up. I ended up selling to buy my '58 Plymouth Belvedere. It was a difficult decision, but a necessary one so that I could move on to my next dream car. Primary Use: Commuting to work Pros: Hot looking car, lots of bang for the buck Cons: Not as quick as I thought it would be, couldn't figure out the idle surging issue |

Looks Cool And Easy To Work On — Just a great all around car. you can just keep it stock or body kit it for that import look or go old school hot rod with it. the engine can easy make 450hp on the stock block. I just love all ford Mustangs. had a lot of them in my time. Primary Use: Sport/fun (spirited driving, track racing, off-roading, etc.) Pros: fast & fun Cons: none |

I Love It!!! — It's a Mustang... an old one at that. What's not to like? It squeaks and rattles, and it's loud and the exhaust smells, but I love every minute I drive in it. She's been a work in progress since I bought it in 2006. Primary Use: Commuting to work Pros: Burnouts Cons: If you're not into loud, A/C-less Mustangs, this just might not be the car for you. |

Fun — Smokey Burnouts, Running from police, getting too many tickets, always getting faster. Way to much trouble but well worth it. Money Pit, Bloddy knuckles are well worth the end result of a fun fast car. Cheap, Fast, and Fun. Buy one Primary Use: Sport/fun (spirited driving, track racing, off-roading, etc.) Pros: Burnouts Cons: Torque |

89 Gt — nice car, but the lights would go out if i turned on the fog lights for more than a few minutes at a time. it would have been a real good car if it was a 5 speed, but the automatic did pretty well after it was rebuilt from me tearing it out at the drag strip at bristol... Primary Use: Family transportation Pros: good car Cons: wore out quick |

5.0 Baby. — 5.0 V8, Trick Flow upper/lower intake, BBK 70mm TB, ARP heads, FRPP B303 cam, Comp Cam roller rockers, stock headers, 2.5" straight pipes to Flowmaster 40 series, no cats. Stock T5 with a Hurst Shifter. 3.73 in the rear. Loud, fast, and it's needed a lot of work. I'll admit it's not the most beautiful of the Mustang breed, but parts are plentiful. And it is good at getting attention. Primary Use: Sport/fun (spirited driving, track racing, off-roading, etc.) Pros: Noise. Nuts. Cons: Fuel economy, irritability. |

Love It — Performance is great on acceleration. Not the greatest handling without upgraded suspension, but not at all bad. Build quality is great, considering it is a 20 year old car, it has needed only minor repairs. Love the body style, but as far as the interior goes, i plan on replacing it with interior from the 03-04 anyway. Gas mileage is not bad, but could be better, and is inexpensive to maintain. As far as the fun factor goes, ask anyone who owns one, we all love them. Primary Use: Sport/fun (spirited driving, track racing, off-roading, etc.) Pros: Cheap to fix, Reliable, About 5000 will get you one in almost perfaect condition Cons: Gas mileage could be better |

Low Mile Stock 5.0 — It was my Uncle's toy that he drove on nice Sundays. Except for a set of Cobra 5 star rims it is bone stock and has under 20,000 miles. Black with a red interior 5spd. It is a fun car to drive. Primary Use: Sport/fun (spirited driving, track racing, off-roading, etc.) Pros: Fun to drive, reliable Cons: needs more power |
