1987 Toyota Celica Overview
The 1987 Toyota Celica remained unchanged from the previous year, when it had been totally redesigned. Now sporting front-wheel drive and a rounder body, the 1987 Celica was a different animal from the previous generation.
The 1987 Celica came with a 2.0-liter, 116-horsepower engine, with the exception of the GT-S, which had 135 horses. The coupe and the hatchback were all available as the ST, GT, or GT-S models. The convertible came as a GT. The GT-S engine got an upgrade to 135-horsepower. For fuel economy, the 1987 Celica got about 26 to 34 mpg, depending on engine and transmission.
Drivers of the 1987 Celica love it for its reliability, and say that with good care the car will run for hundreds of thousands of miles. Owners of '87 Celicas also say that the front-wheel drive means they handle well in inclement weather. Many owners have had problems with rust.

datatrader I bought my 1987 Toyota Celica new in 1987. I wanted the Supra but the insurance was twice as much. Glad with my decision. I have been driving this sweet ride for 28 years! Unbelievable quality and reliability. It now has over 250,000 miles and still runs like a champ. The engine doesn't burn oil and I've only had minor repairs. the usual: timing belt, water pump, brakes etc. Still have the original clutch! I now have other cars and use this as my daily commuter (only 20 miles round trip). I just love driving it still. It's not really a sports car but it feels like one. That little 16 valve engine is a hoot matched to the 5 speed manual transmission. You close the hood and it's heavy - shuts with a thunk that makes you feel safe. The car rides so solid that you feel very secure even tho it's a smaller car. In the snow this ride with it's front wheel drive is a billygoat! I just trust it. It may not be the sportiest car out there but it will absolutely put a smile on your face. Gas mileage? phenomenal... well over 30 mpg on the HWY and about 23 in city stop and go. It's so good that you don't mind winding up the rpms a bit and having some fun! On a twisty road you can hit a curve at speed .. downshift and power thru the curve stable and true. did I mention that this is a fun ride? How many folks are still driving a car they bought 28 years ago ... and still lovin' it?
