1983 Jeep Wagoneer Overview
Most cars never make it past the 20 year marker, but 1983 marked the 21st year of the Jeep Wagoneer series. More amazing than the longevity of this line is that so little of the car was ever changed during this time. In 1983, the Jeep Wagoneer had the 401 cubic inch V8 engine that had become the monster of the line years earlier, and would remain so until its discontinuation. In addition to the 401, there was a 360 cubic inch V8 and a 304 cubic inch straight 6. Of course, the three and four speed manual transmissions and the three speed automatic were still available to control these powerful engines as well.
This rarity of changes is one of the major reasons that the Jeep Wagoneer line is today a great vehicle for restoration and customization. Most of the parts from year to year were interchangeable, so locating necessary parts for the 1983 should not be a problem at all, because many of them have a range of 10 years or more to choose from. The 1983 Jeep Wagoneer is new enough that it might not need too much work to bring it up to the level you might need for off-roading pleasure. Certainly not an antique or classic yet, the 1983 Jeep Wagoneer is still a member of a classic line of 4WD vehicles, and better, can be just as useful as a family SUV if thats more what you need. Versatility has always been a part of the Jeep Wagoneer line, and 1983 was no different.

wagoneer79 This article is not written by someone who knows much about this vehicle. In 1983 the large majority of Wagoneers has the 360 which was one of two options. The inline six went in a few vehicles. AMC V8s were the 304, 360 and 401. The six cylinder was the 258 4.2 litre. No such thing as a Jeep 304 straight six. No 304 or 401 in late 70s and up Wagoneers.
