1976 Toyota FJ40 Review

Over Built Lasts Forever — The 1976 FJ40 is waht everyone wants out of a 4wd. it accelerates about the same reguardless of payload or terrain. with the 4 piston disc over drum setup it can stop on a dime if terrain allows for it and with the straight front and rear axel you have pleanty of articulation to navagate some of the toughest obsticles even bone stock. the body has several places that will trap water and rust if not sealed and undercoated. with a 4.2l I6 putting out 135hp and 250 ft/lbs of torq and 4.11 rear end it will take you up the steepest grades. this low gear range makes for bad fuel milage, 6-14 mpg but with the large engine bay you can swap in any engine to suit your needs. this vehicle is fun to drive in the sumer monthes with the top and doors and top off, and in the winter you will have the upper hand and be able to point and laugh at the rice burners stuck in the ditches. parts are expensive but everythig is overbuilt so you hardly need them and it is easy to retrofit readily avalible parts to work.

Primary Use: Sport/fun (spirited driving, track racing, off-roading, etc.)

Pros: the adventure is the destination

Cons: spendy parts
